WHAT IS
STOICHIOMETRY?
A SECTION OF CHEMISTRY
THAT INVOLVES USING
RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN
REACTANTS AND/OR
PRODUCTS IN A CHEMICAL
REACTION TO DETERMINE
DESIRED QUANTITATIVE DATA.
MAIN CONVERSIONS:
1. MOLES TO MOLES

2. MOLES TO GRAMS OR
GRAMS TO MOLES

3. GRAMS TO GRAMS
PROBLEM SOLVING
Stoichiometry of reactions of solids/liquids yielding to solids/liquids
1. How many mL of 1.3 M HCI are needed to completely react with
150 mL of 2.1 M Mg(OH)?

Step 1: Write the balanced equation.

Step 2: Solve for the mL of HCI.

Therefore, 0.484 L or 484.6 mL of 1.3 M
HCI are needed to completely react
with 150 mL of 2.1 M Mg(OH).
2. How many grams of MgCIs will be produced if 250 mL of 0.23 M
Mg(OH)2 reacts with the excess HCI?

Step 1: Write the balanced equation.

Step 2: Solve for the grams of MgCl.

Therefore, 5.48 g of MgCl2 will be
produced if 250 mL of 0.23 M Mg(OH)2
reacts with the excess HCI.
(1) WHEN THE MASS OF A REACTANT OR PRODUCT
IS GIVEN, THE MASS IS FIRST CONVERTED TO THE
NUMBER OF MOLES, USING THE MOLAR MASS.
(2) THE STOICHIOMETRIC RATIO GIVEN BY THE CHEMICAL EQUATION
FOR THE REACTION IS THEN USED TO FIND THE NUMBER OF MOLES OF
ANOTHER REACTANT THAT COMBINES WITH THE ORIGINAL SUBSTANCE
OR THE NUMBER OF MOLES OF PRODUCT THAT FORMS.
(3) FINALLY, THE MASS OF THE OTHER REACTANT OR THE PRODUCT IS
COMPUTED FROM ITS MOLAR MASS.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Stoichiometry of reactions of solids/liquids yielding to solids/liquids
1. How many grams of hydrogen are produced when 5.9 moles of
aluminum reacts with excess hydrochloric acid?

Step 1: Write the balanced equation.

Step 2: Solve for the grams of hydrogen.

Therefore, 17.89 g of hydrogen is
produced when 5.9 moles of aluminum
react with excess hydrochloric acid.
2. Fermentation is a complex chemical process of making wine by
converting glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide. What is the mass
of ethanol produced if 500.0 grams of glucose reacts completely?

Step 1: Write the balanced equation.

Step 2: Solve for the mass of ethanol.

Therefore, 255.7 g of ethanol is
produced if 500.0 grams of glucose
reacts completely.
