HISTORY :

Plastic was invented as early as 1907 by Leo Hendrik Baekeland, who accidentally created
Bakelite. This is the record of the first ever plastic derived from synthetic materials although earlier
plastic was derived from organic materials .However, the history of the first synthetic polymer traces
back to 1869. In the mid-1800s, materials like combs, trinkets, billiard boards, and piano keys were
made from elephant ivory.

The scarce material that elephant ivory is, a billiards company in New York offered 10,000
USD as a reward to anyone who would come up with an alternative. That’s when John Wesley Hyatt
derived celluloid from cellulose, the polymer found in plants .But plastic started becoming a problem
only in the early 20th century when plastics began to be made from petroleum. Chemists discovered
waste gases from the refineries like ethylene could be used to create all sorts of polymers- PET -
polyethylene terephthalate for example, instead of only relying on celluloid for making plastics.

Anything and everything could be made from plastic and there was no looking back. This
discovery was the prelude of the plastic tide we are facing today. Plastic was so cheap that companies
started making things we never imagined in the first place.

Disposables made from plastics came to be viewed as a relief for the American housewives
from drudgery. The disposable plates, cups, and cutlery liberated housewives from about 40 hours of
cleaning.

INDUSTRY PROFILE:

Polymers are the large molecules composed of repeated chemical units. The terms polymer is
derived from the Greek word’s poly and mers meaning “many parts”. Polymers are the most rapidly
growing sector of the materials industry. Industrial polymers, chemical compounds used in the
manufacture of synthetic industrial materials. In the industrial polymers, chemistry of, polymers are
categorized according to whether they are formed through chain growth reactions.

Types of polymers are:

 addition polymers

 polyethylene

 polypropylene

 acrylics

 poly (tetrafluoroethylene)

 condensation polymers.

India, currently the third largest consumer of polymers, is about to become a global polymers
powerhouse. According to recent Global data figures, India is already the World’s third largest
consumer of polymers, growth in the polymers really kicked off in India after the country’s economic
liberalization in 1991.

Despite the fact that India has one of the highest plastics recycling rates in the world (an
estimated 47% of all plastics is recycled) the demand for recycled plastics is huge, especially for
commodity plastics such as PP, PET, PS, LDPE and HDPE.

Plastic industry is significantly contributing to the growth of Indian economy finding its usage
in key industrial sectors- automotive, textile, packaging, irrigation, agriculture, etc. A wide variety of
plastic raw materials is produced to meet the needs of different sectors of the economy. Polymer raw
materials are categorized into a commodity, engineering, and specialty plastic. Growing
industrialization, increased per capita income and living standard offers a huge opportunity for the
sustained growth of plastic industry in India.

CHAPTER – III
DEPARTMENT AND ITS FUNCTIONS

HR DEPARTMENT:

The human resources department handles a range of different functions within an

organization. The department is responsible for hiring and firing employees, training workers,
maintaining interoffice relationships and interpreting employment laws. The human resources
department handles many necessary functions of your business. It is instrumental in
providing labor law compliance, record keeping, hiring and training, compensation, relational
assistance and help with handling specific performance issues.

A human resources department is a critical component of employee well-being in any

business, no matter how small. HR responsibilities include payroll, benefits, hiring, firing,
and keeping up to date with state and federal tax laws.

Any mix-up concerning these issues can cause major legal problems for your
business, as well as major employee dissatisfaction. But small businesses often don't have the
staff or the budget to properly handle the nitty gritty details of HR. Because of this, more and
more small businesses are beginning to outsource their HR needs.

The HR department in Sri Poovathal polymers is not very functional like the other
departments and they do not concentrate much on the HR activities of the company so, there
is no need of outsourcing of HR like mentioned above. There are two HR staffs in the
company who monitor the attendance of the employees.

The other main role of the HR staffs are payroll administration .Payroll
administration, including produce checks, handling taxes, and dealing with sick time and
vacation time. In our company the payroll administration includes only providing of wages
and salaries to the employees.

Once in while the company would attain a bulk order like once in a year or twice in a
year. During those times the company would make use of their spare machines for production
but there would be shortage of workmen. The HR staffs would incur workers from outside of
the company to manage the orders.

9
FINANCIAL DEPARTMENT

A finance department is the unit of a business responsible for obtaining and handling
any monies on behalf of the organization. The department controls the income and
expenditure in addition to ensuring effective business running with minimum disruptions.
Besides the traditional roles of handling the payroll, income and expenses, finance
department responsibilities also include economic analysis to improve key business
strategies.

1.Accounting:

Daily account record keeping is a finance department function that entails reconciling
a company's financial registers to make suitable business decisions. Through bookkeeping
and income statement preparations, the unit supports the management in filing requisite
financial data that's useful in managing funds.

2. Examining financial statements and reporting:

By analyzing a company's financial statements, the finance department evaluates

economic trends, identifies its future investment and cultivates long-term business plans. It
uses and synthesizes financial analysis information to assist in business decision-making.

3. Preparing and forecasting budgets:

The finance department plans and implements the company's financial year budget.
The department also conducts research and collects data that assists in the organization's
temporary and permanent financial forecast. The information is essential in planning and
providing informed decisions critical to expansion, such as staff training and asset
procurement.

4. Managing operations systems:

The finance department plays a significant part in acquiring, updating and maintaining
the latest operations systems to improve efficiency. A systems change may include
automation of various functions or digitalization of some organization's systems.

10
PURCHASE DEPARTMENT

STEP 1: Vendor Quotation

Procuring the Vendor Quotation and asking for Proform a invoice. If satisfied issue a
Purchase orders. According to it the raw materials are procured and ordered.

STEP 2: Purchase Order

Purchase Order Types

Purchasing provides the following purchase order types:

 Standard Purchase Order

 Planned Purchase Order
 Blanket Purchase Agreement
 Contract Purchase Agreement

You can use the Document Name field in the Document Types window to change the
names of these documents. For example, if you enter Regular Purchase Order in the
Document Name field for the Standard Purchase Order type, your choices in the Type field in
the Purchase Orders window will be Regular Purchase Order, Planned Purchase Order,
Blanket Purchase Agreement, and Contract Purchase Agreement.

Standard Purchase Orders:

You generally create standard purchase orders for one-time purchase of various items.
You create standard purchase orders when you know the details of the goods or services you
require, estimated costs, quantities, delivery schedules, and accounting distributions. If you
use encumbrance accounting, the purchase order may be encumbered since the required
information is known.

11
Blanket Purchase Agreements:

You create blanket purchase agreements when you know the detail of the goods or
services you plan to buy from a specific supplier in a period, but you do not yet know the
detail of your delivery schedules. You can use blanket purchase agreements to specify
negotiated prices for your items before actually purchasing them.

Blanket Releases:

You can issue a blanket release against a blanket purchase agreement to place the
actual order (as long as the release is within the blanket agreement affectivity dates). If you
use encumbrance accounting, you can encumber each release.

Contract Purchase Agreements:

You create contract purchase agreements with your suppliers to agree on specific
terms and conditions without indicating the goods and services that you will be purchasing.
You can later issue standard purchase orders referencing your contracts, and you can
encumber these purchase orders if you use encumbrance accounting

Planned Purchase Orders:

A planned purchase order is a long-term agreement committing to buy items or

services from a single source. You must specify tentative delivery schedules and all details
for goods or services that you want to buy, including charge account, quantities, and
estimated cost.

Scheduled Releases:

You can issue scheduled releases against a planned purchase order to place the actual
orders. If you use encumbrance accounting, you can use the planned purchase order to
reserve funds for long term agreements. You can also change the accounting distributions on
each release and the system will reverse the encumbrance for the planned purchase order and
create a new encumbrance for the release.

12
STEP 3: Issuing of a Purchase Invoice:

It will have all the specific details like Quantity, Description, Time, etc.

STEP 4: Match the Purchase order and the Invoice:

Dispatching the Materials the materials are then dispatched to the respective Plants
and Machines, Gate entry of transaction is made and the Bill is stamped.

STEP 5: Quality Check department:

All the materials are sent to the Quality Check Department to check for any short
falls. Whether to accept or reject .If it accepted the process is continued, if it rejected the
materials are sent back.

STEP 6: Stores Department:

After accepting to quality checks it goes to stores, stores ledger makes an entry.
Material receipt note is raised. Finance people enter the invoice in respective ledger.

STEP 7: Production Department:

A note is issued ("Issue note) to the respective department and then material goes to
production department. Then production begins immediately.

After the materials are received the Manufacturing Process begins.

13
PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT:

The production department is the busiest department of the company because

according to the orders the department would keep on producing the products.

RAW MATERIALS USED:

The raw material used for the production of the products is the Polypropylene
granules (PP granules). We get the raw materials from the Reliance polymers which is a well
known name in the polymer industry.

Polypropylene (PP), also known as polypropene, is a thermoplastic polymer used in a

wide variety of applications. It is produced via chain-growth polymerization from
themonomer propylene. Polypropylene belongs to the group of polyolefin sand is partially
crystalline and non-polar. Its properties are similar to polyethylene, but it is slightly harder
and more heat resistant. It is a white, mechanically rugged material and has a high chemical
resistance .Polypropylene is the second-most widely produced commodity plastic(after
polyethylene) and it is often used in packaging and labeling.

Polypropylene is in many aspects similar to polyethylene, especially in solution

behavior and electrical properties. The methyl group improves mechanical properties and
thermal resistance, although the chemical resistance decreases. The properties of
polypropylene depend on the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution,
crystallinity, type and proportion of comonomer (if used) and the is to acticity. In isotactic
polypropylene, for example, the methyl groups are oriented on one side of the carbon
backbone. This arrangement creates a greater degree of crystallinity and results in a stiffer
material that is more resistant to creep than both atactic polypropylene and polyethylene.

Polypropylene is recyclable and has the number "5" as its resin identification code.
Theadvocacy organization Environmental Working Group classifies PP as of low to
moderatehazard. PP is dope-dyed; no water is used in its dyeing, in contrast with cotton. Like
allorganic compounds, polypropylene is combustible. The flash point of a typical
composition is260°C; auto ignition temperature is 388°C.Traditionally, three manufacturing
processes are the most representative ways to produce polypropylene.
14
1. Hydrocarbon slurry or suspension:

Uses a liquid inert hydrocarbon diluent in the reactor to facilitate transfer of propylene
to the catalyst, the removal of heat from the system ,Thedeactivation /removal of the catalyst
as well as dissolving the atactic polymer. The range of grades that could be produced was
very limited. (The technology has fallen into disuse).

2. Bulk slurry (or bulk):

Uses liquid propylene instead of liquid inert hydrocarbon diluent. The polymer does
not dissolve into a diluent, but rather rides on the liquid propyTlene. The formed polymer is
withdrawn and any un reacted monomer is flashed off.

3. Gas phase:

Uses gaseous propylene in contact with the solid catalyst, resulting in a fluidized- bed
medium. These are some of the methods implied by the Reliance industries to produce PP
granules .We purchase the PP granules from them in the form of sack.

FULL FORM:

 HDPE : high density polyethylene

 LDPE : low density polyethylene

 LLDPE : high low – density polyethylene

 HMHDPE : high molecular weight high density polyethylene

PRODUCTS/SERVICE PROFILE:

For billions of people plastic bags are an efficient and cheap way to transport
goods .As the production of plastic bags continues to increase worldwide.

SRI POOVATHAL POLYMERS only produce the polymer bag or polythene.

Petrochemicals dominate the raw material stock for producing plastic bags. The waste
majority of single use plastic bags are made out of a few structural chains of the molecule’s
polyethylene.

 Extraction of raw material:

The polyethylene that makes plastic bags is drives either from refined oil or cracked
natural gas. These hydrocarbons are found mostly underground and must therefore be
reached by drilling wells. This process disrupts the local ecosystem and can present
disastrous consequences for human and environmental health if leaks occur.

17
 Extrusion of plastic film:

To begin the manufacturing process, raw HDPE, LDPE or LLPDE plastic pellets are
again super headed and pressurized to form a uniform molten liquid-which air is pumped into
from below .Producing a long thin balloon of pliable plastic film that passes through a tall
vertical corridor.

 Printing:

Single use plastic bags are composed almost entirely of pure polyethylene
molecules, however most plastic bags tend to have some form of branding printed onto them.
The printing process for a sensitive and light material like a plastic bag requires a series of
flexographic rollers that add color and type to bags.

18
 Converting:

The two printed sheets are then pressed at the edges to form the sides of the bag. The
plastic can be wound and then cut to the desired shape and size. Depending on the desired
commercial intent for the bag .

19
FINISHING SECTION:

The finishing section is the final section of the production department and from this
section the final product comes out of the company. In here the basic process happening is
the packing. The packing is done in sacks and there is a weighing machine in which the sacks
are weighed and sent out to delivery.

Another process in this section is the quality checking. The bags would be checked
for any damage. If the sealing and cutting is done manually then the product would also be
checked for accurateness wholly. Only after quality checking the products would be packed
in sacks and would be weighed.Form the finishing section the sacks are sent to the sales
department from where the delivery would be done.

20
SALES AND MARKETING DEPARTMENT:

MARKETING

The marketing and sales are co-functioning in our company. Both these are the main
functions of any company. Only this department gets the output of the input being put up in
the production department of the company.

The heart of your business success lies in its marketing. Most aspects of your business
depend on successful marketing. The overall marketing umbrella covers advertising, public
relations, promotions and sales. Marketing is a process by which a product or service is
introduced and promoted to potential customers.

The marketing of SRI POOVATHAL polymers was at full swing during the last
decade. More number of people were assigned to market the products of the company and
once the company attained a relative number of customers they stopped concentrating in
marketing. Now the company has loyal customers who only buy from our company.

SALES:

The head of the sales department is responsible for all the activities going on in the
sales department. The role of the sales head is to pass on the information about the orders
received to the finishing section of the production department so that, they could pack the
products accordingly for the delivery.

The sales head also manages the deliverers who deliver the products to the customers
who ordered for the products correctly. The delivery would be done by the transportation
owned by the company. Sometimes the delivery would be done through rented vehicles if the
order quantity is huge.

21
PRICINGS:

The pricing of the products would be done according to the existing market and the
approximate price is as mentioned.

 Price of 1 kg of PP roll=R$95

 Price of 1 kg of PP bags-Rs.125

 Price of 1 kg of PP sheet - Rs.125

SALES DETAILS:

CHAPTER - V

CONCLUSION

The Internship at the Sri Poovathal polymers helped me to know about various
departments and the qualities that are to be followed in financial and social institution. To
conclude this at first, I would like to thank my honorable Mam Ms.B.Deivanai for her
tremendous help. Without her help I cannot complete my report and I also want to thank
the entire Sri Poovathal management team who helped me a lot to gathered the data. And at
last, I can see from my analysis I identified service quality does not have much effect towards
customers repurchase intention with Sri Poovathal private ltd. Moreover, research also shows
that price and brand experience have a strong relationship with repurchase intention.

The variables pricing and brand experience were emphasized more based on
which most of the time customer retention is created. So, as we can see from our previous
analysis Customer’s notices price and brand experience for the repurchase. The company
made me to know clearly about how a company can survive in the present competition
world. This internship has given me enough opportunities to learn and understand the
manufacturing process and I have also learned various qualities from the company as well as
from the company staffs.
