Participate and Assist


(Note to Student Teacher: As you participate and assist your FS Resource Teacher in
her daily task, please take note of what you are expected to give more attention to
as asked in the next step of this Learning Episode, NOTICE).

Participate activity by assisting your Resource Teacher in his/her daily task. Take the
initiative to offer your assistance. Don’t wait for your Resource Teacher to ask for it.

1. Take note of the following:
● Your Resource Teacher comments, facial expressions, gestures and actions in
class
● Students comments, facial expressions, gestures and behavior in class
● How your Resource Teacher relates to you
● The classroom proceedings
● The classroom atmosphere-relaxed or threatening?

Analyze

1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the
TEDx videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess?

From the different teacher competencies and standards mentioned above,


the teacher should posses’ competencies such as valuing personal growth and
professional development and exhibit high personal regard for the profession
maintaining qualities that uphold the dignity of teaching such as caring attitude,
respect and integrity. Teachers should also value professional reflection and learning
to improve their practice.

2. Are those competencies limited only to professional competencies?

I believe that those competencies are not only limited to professional


competencies but also applicable as practical competencies for self-development as
an educator. But those competencies are greatly used as professional competencies.

3. For a teacher to be great, it is enough to possess the professional


competencies to plan a lesson, execute a lesson plan, PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT

learning, compute and report grades? Explain your answer.

No, but I believe that the above qualities are very significant for a teacher to
become a great teacher, but more than that for a teacher to become completely
great he/she has to be passionate and so driven to teach. He/she should also
integrate real life competencies for students, and tailored learning strategies for
students.

4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important - personal qualities or


professional competencies?

There’s no such thing as a perfect teacher, and a teacher doesn’t have to be


perfect to be called a great teacher. I believe that for a teacher to be great she has to
poses both the personal qualities and professional competencies. There is should
always be a balance between the EQ and IQ of a teacher.

< 5. Who are the teachers that we remember most?

There’s a saying that states “to teach is to touch a life forever”, teachers that
we remember the most are those teachers that made an extraordinary impact in our
life. They didn’t just impart knowledge to their students but they go beyond to make
a difference in their student lives. This I believe the reason we remember our
teachers, and in the same way I want to be remembered by my students as a teacher
who deeply impacted their lives.

productive teacher for my students and in the community.

Which professional competency am I strongly capable of demonstrating?

Among the different professional competencies, I’m confident of my


Communication and Interpersonal skills. Because through these skills I can easily
communicate and teach effectively to my students. Having these skills enables me to
understand my students more and easily convey learning instructions.

In which competencies do I need to develop more?

I think that the competency that I should focus more is the Classroom
Management because as a student educator I still don’t have an actual classroom
teaching experience.

Who are the teachers that we remember most?

As being told in this lesson a great teacher loves to teach and at the same
time loves, to learn. This lesson has thought me the importance of competencies, as
a critical method in equipping my students with knowledge, skills and attitudes that
they will need to successfully navigate their personal journeys in learning.

I also discover that as an educator we should possess the ethics of a


professional teacher that will surely help us in the journey. As a teacher I should
always posses’ empathy for my students, by understanding them will make me teach
effectively as a teacher. That I will always strive hard to update my knowledge and
possess the competencies, and qualities of a good teacher, because to teach is to
