Quarter 2 - Module 5:
Applications of Linear Functions
What’s In
Description: This activity will enable you to recall translations of verbal phrases to mathematical
phrases.
Directions: Match the verbal phrase in Column A to the mathematical phrase in Column B. Write
the letter that corresponds to your answer in your activity notebook.

What’s New
Directions: Consider the situation below and answer the questions that follow.
A toy car moves at the rate of 1/2 m per second. You recorded the distance
travelled by the toy car for 10 seconds as:
Time in seconds 2 4 6 8 10
Distance in meters 1 2 3 4 5
Questions:
3. Based on the table, could you predict the distance travelled by the toy car in a succeeding
time?
4. If the toy car continues to move at the same rate, what would be its distance travelled in 15
seconds? 20 seconds?
5. With the same rate of travel, how long does it take to travel a 50 meters distance?
What is it

There are a lot of relationships between two variables that exist in real life. A change in the
value of the independent variable, say x, may cause an effect on the value of the dependent variable,
say y, with respect to the slope and intercepts.
The weekly recycling profit P (in pesos) is a function of number of kilo – grams k of recycled
plastic per week. The function approximating the profit is defined as
a. Construct a table showing the relation between the number of kilograms of recycled plastic
and the weekly profit.
b. How much was Mang Tomas’ profit if he had recycled 100 kg of plastic in a week?
c. How many kilograms of plastic were recycled if Mang Tomas’ profit in a week had been
₱ 1,000 ?
3
Solutions:
The table of values suggests that the range of P(k) is {P(k)| -600 ≤ P(k) ≤ 2, 600}.
b. From the table and graph, if Mang Tomas had recycled 100 kg of plastic products in a week, he
would have realized a profit of ₱200.
c. If Mang Tomas’ profit in a week was ₱1,000, he would have recycled 200 kg of plastic.
d. Since the value is not reflected on the table, make use of interpolation. Draw a dotted
perpendicular line to the k-axis through 300. Its intersection with the graph indicates the
corresponding P(k) value of ₱1,800. This value can also be obtained by finding P(300).
= 2,400 – 600
= ₱1,800
= - 600
This means that if Mang Tomas would have not been able to recycle a single amount of
plastic in a week, he would have lost ₱600, probably due to operating expenses. A break-even profit
occurs when 75 kg of plastic is recycled in a week.

Assessment
Directions: Apply your knowledge in linear functions by solving each problem. Write only the letter that
corresponds to your answer in your notebook.
1. Sarah earns P42 an hour in a dress factory with an additional of P50 for her daily meal allowance.
Write an equation for her earning for one day. Use y for her total earning and x for the number of
hours.
A. y = 42x + 50 C. y = 42x -50
B. X=42y +50 D. x = 42y -50
2. Suppose she earned a total of P260 on a Monday, how long did she work for that day?
A. 5 hrs B. 4 hrs C. 6 hrs D. 7 hrs
3. A manufacturer’s earnings can be represented by a linear function. For an order of 50 stand fans it
earns P7,500 and for 100 order it earns P 15,000. Write an equation for the linear function.
A. y = 750x C. y = 50x + 7500
B. y = 150x D. x = 50y + 7500
5. How much would the manufacturer earn if it accepted an order of P200 electric fans?
A. 30,000 B. P30,000 C. 60,000 D. P60,000
6. If the manufacturer has a maximum earning of P75,000.00, what is the most number of order of
electric fans has it?
7. A store charges P15 per hour for charging the battery of a cellular phone, plus P10 for the use of
charger. If the total cost of charging is a linear function, find the cost of a two-hour charging.
A. 30 B. 40 C. 50 D. 60

For items 8 - 10, refer to the situation below.
A survey of out-of-school youths in your barangay was conducted. From year 2008 to 2012,
the number of out-of-school youths was tallied and was observed to increase at a constant rate as shown
in the table below.
Number of out-of-school 30 37 44 51 58
youth (y)
8. If the number of years after 2008 is represented by x, what mathematical model can you make to
represent the data above?
A. y = -7x + 30 C. y = 7x + 30
B. y = -7x + 23 D. y = 7x + 23
9. If the pattern continues, can you predict the number of out-of-school youths by year 2020?
A. Yes, the number of out-of-school youths by year 2020 is 107.
B. Yes, the number of out-of-school youths by year 2020 is 114.
C. No, because it is not stipulated in the problem.
D. No, because the data is insufficient.
10. The number of out-of-school youths has continued to increase. If you are the SK Chairman, what
would be the best action to minimize the growing number of out-of-youths?
A. Conduct a job fair. C. Let them work in your barangay.
B. Create a sports project. D. Encourage them to e
