Activity 2: PLAY WITH IT!

Directions: Consider the situation below and answer the questions that follow.

A toy car moves at the rate of 1/2 m per second. You recorded the distance
travelled by the toy car for 10 seconds as:

Time in seconds 2 4 6 8 10

Distance in meters 1 2 3 4 5

Questions:

1. What is the dependent variable.

2. What is the independent variable?

3. Based on the table, could you predict the distance travelled by the toy car in a succeeding
time?

4. If the toy car continues to move at the same rate, what would be its distance travelled in 15
seconds? 20 seconds?

5. With the same rate of travel, how long does it take to travel a 50 meters distance?

What is it

2
There are a lot of relationships between two variables that exist in real life. A change in the
value of the independent variable, say x, may cause an effect on the value of the dependent variable,
say y, with respect to the slope and intercepts.

Consider the following examples.

Example 1: An agent of a mobile phone receives a commission of P700 per every

phone he can sell plus a basic monthly salary of P12,000 from his company.
Solutions:

Let x be the number of mobile phones he can sell in a month

Let y be the total amount he receives in a month
We can express this situation as a linear function y=700x+12,000. The amount the agent
receives in a month varies depending on the number of mobile phones he can sell. Let us make a
table showing the different amounts he can receive for the given number of phones he can sell.

Number of mobile phones sold (x) 1 2 3 4 5

Total amount received (y) 12,700 13,400 14,100 14,800 15,500

Can you give other values of x and y?

Number of mobile phones sold (x) 6 7 8

Total amount received (y) 16,200 16,900 17,600

Example 2. In Barangay Pinan, Mang Tomas recycles plastic products as a livelihood.

The weekly recycling profit P (in pesos) is a function of number of kilo – grams k of recycled
plastic per week. The function approximating the profit is defined as

P (k) = 8k – 600, where 0 ≤ k ≤ 400 .

a. Construct a table showing the relation between the number of kilograms of recycled plastic
and the weekly profit.
b. How much was Mang Tomas’ profit if he had recycled 100 kg of plastic in a week?
c. How many kilograms of plastic were recycled if Mang Tomas’ profit in a week had been
₱ 1,000 ?

d. Estimate his profit if he recycled 300 kg of plastic in a week.

e. What is P (0) ? Interpret this value.

3
Solutions:

a. Construct a table of values for k and P.

k 0 25 50 75 100 200 400

P(k) -600 -400 -200 0 200 1,000 2,600

The table of values suggests that the range of P(k) is {P(k)| -600 ≤ P(k) ≤ 2, 600}.

b. From the table and graph, if Mang Tomas had recycled 100 kg of plastic products in a week, he
would have realized a profit of ₱200.

c. If Mang Tomas’ profit in a week was ₱1,000, he would have recycled 200 kg of plastic.

d. Since the value is not reflected on the table, make use of interpolation. Draw a dotted
perpendicular line to the k-axis through 300. Its intersection with the graph indicates the
corresponding P(k) value of ₱1,800. This value can also be obtained by finding P(300).

P(k) = 8k – 600, k =300

P (300) = 8(300) – 600

= 2,400 – 600

= ₱1,800

e. P(0), that is, the value of P at k = 0 is

P(0) = 8(0) – 600

= - 600

This means that if Mang Tomas would have not been able to recycle a single amount of
plastic in a week, he would have lost ₱600, probably due to operating expenses. A break-even profit
occurs when 75 kg of plastic is recycled in a week.

Activity 3: Solve Me!

Directions: Solve each problem completely.

1. A typist charges Php 4 per page for a typing job, plus an additional fee of Php 5. How much will
one pay for 2 pages? for 4 pages? 6 pages? 8 pages?

2. A store owner made a record of his sales of a new novelty item. The data were graphed in

What I Have Learned

Activity 4: LET’S SOLVE!

Directions: Solve the following problems below.

1. Angelo begins his training in preparation for the next Palarong Pambansa. At 6:00 am he starts
to run and leaves his home. At 7:30 am he finishes his run and covered a distance of 7.5 kilometers.

A. What is his average speed over the course of the run?

B. How many kilometers did he run after the first half hour?
C. If he kept running at the same rate and covered a distance of 8 kilometers, how long did he
run?

2. A certain flower that is 10 centimeters (cm) tall is planted. This flower grows an approximate
of 0.4 cm per day. How tall will it be after 6 days? 8.5 days?

3. A local fitness gym charges Php 40.00 per session and an additional Php30.00 per hour (h) for
the use of treadmill. How much will Dean pay if he uses treadmill for 2 h? 1.5 h? 30 min?

What I Can Do

Activity 5: DO IT YOURSELF

DIY MATH

Direction: Create a worksheet containing applications of linear equations in two

variables. Provide solutions for each word problem. Afterward, ask your
classmates to accomplish your worksheet. You may also share your work
through the internet so that other students can benefit from it. You may
use any document processing software to create your worksheet.
