75% OF PEOPLE WHY

WORLDWIDE DO
NOT MEET THE FOOD
RECOMMENDED
DAILY INTAKE. SUPPLEMENTS?
** World Health Organization

We all know that vitamins and minerals are important to our diet, but
did you know that your body could not function without them?
In fact, we require small amounts of numerous vitamins and minerals in our daily diet to
ensure normal functioning of our body. That is why it is important to have a well-balanced
diet. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a minimum of 5 servings of fruit
and vegetables per day.* The right balance of nutrients in our food can help us enjoy life
more and get sick less often.
* Recommendation of the World Heath Organisation

MOST ADULTS WOULD NEED TO AT LEAST

DOUBLE THEIR CURRENT INTAKE
OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
TO MEET THE WHO RECOMMENDATION

But with our busy schedules and active lives, the majority of us are not eating enough of
the recommended amount, creating a gap between what we eat and what we need. Yet
many experts are concerned that even the fruit and vegetables we buy in shops today are
not as nutritious as they used to be.

SUPPLEMENTS HELP FILL

THE GAP
Supplements can help fill the gap left in our diets, making sure our bodies get the right
range of nutrients in the proper quantities and that food supplements fit into even the
busiest schedule with ease.

Supplements are right for you, if

• You do not eat a minimum of 5 servings of fruit and vegetables that are
recommended by WHO
• You eat 5-9 servings but don’t get a wide variety
• You often don’t have time to make healthy meals
• You often choose convenient, processed foods over healthier options.

POWER UP YOUR PLATE OVER 170 PLANTS.

The Greek word ‘phyto’ means plant, and the term ‘nutrients’ translates into life-enabling
substances. Phytonutrients are plant nutrients found in fruit and vegetables. Plants produce
phytonutrients to promote their own growth and protect themselves from cellular damage
and disease.

The vibrant colours of fruit and vegetables are often due to these plant-based nutrients,

WHAT MAKES
The NUTRILITE Brand
NO. 1*?

HISTORY
In 1934, Carl F. Rehnborg launched the first multivitamin/multimineral supplement sold in
North America. For more than 80 years, the NUTRILITE brand has continued to be a leader
in nutritional science and plant-based supplementation. It is this passion and commitment
to using nature and science together in perfect harmony, and the vision of wellbeing through
nutrition, that inspired the creation of the NUTRILITE brand back in 1934. Today, 80 years after
its birth, the NUTRILITE brand is helping thousands of people all around the world live better,
more active lives.

NATURE
We are passionate about diversity. We strive to preserve the earth’s natural resources and
ensure that our customers benefit from the finest nutrient-rich concentrates that plants have

properties. To ensure the nutrient richness of our supplements, we make certain that the
plants we use for NUTRILITE products are sustainably farmed, and that the land we farm and
surrounding communities are well looked after.

OUR STORY
THE POWER OF A PLANT-BASED DIET

While living in China in the early 20th century, Nutrilite founder Carl F.
Rehnborg learned first-hand the benefits of a plant-based diet.
In the cities, where people ate far more sugar, salt and fat and far fewer plant-based foods,
Carl met people who suffered from poor nutritional health. By contrast, in the countryside,
where fresh fruit and vegetables were plentiful, people were much healthier overall.

Carl’s observations and experiments led him to identify important but unknown compounds
in plants that he called “associated food factors.” He understood that people who lacked
these associated food factors in their diets were not eating enough fruit and vegetables,
and consequently, they were not as healthy as they could be.

In 1934, with this idea as his foundation, Carl began his business and introduced the first
multivitamin/multimineral supplement for sale in North America. In 1939, the company Carl
F. Rehnborg founded was renamed Nutrilite Products, Inc. Today, we know the associated food
factors Carl discovered as phytonutrients. These organic compounds give plants their colour,
protect them from environmental stresses, and provide a bounty of nutrients. The vibrant plant
colours represent different spectrums of health benefits. By including phytonutrients in our
daily diet, we are better able to achieve our optimal wellbeing and can help maintain our bodies’
proper function. Carl F. Rehnborg was a true pioneer in the study of plant nutrients and nutrition
– helping millions of people to this day understand the power of a plant-based diet!

sharing
ABO experience
We couldn’t help but wonder – how do the best Amway
Business Owners work? After all, these are the people to learn
from. We asked them to tell us stories of their
co-operation with AMWAY™ and to share their experiences,
as the comments and thoughts of successful practitioners
are the most valuable sources of information. Below you will
find some key rules by which they try to abide. For instance,
Colin and Andrea Gordon told us how to effectively develop a
business based on AMWAY Nutrition products. We believe that
this information will help you on your way to success!

COLIN AND
ANDREA GORDON

UK, Founders Platinum

Nutrilite’s philosophy and approach to nutrition is unique and this resonated with our
background of nutrition and biology, which is, a PhD in Food & Nutritional Sciences and
an MSc in Immunology. Through Amway training, visiting the Nutrilite Health Institute in
California, and using Nutrilite products, we have helped ourselves and many other people to
improve their health.

After joining Amway, through personal use, we quickly learned how effective the products
were and that they saved us money. To make people believe in the Amway Opportunity,
we held business meetings with our uplines and arranged team training so they could see the
bigger picture of the business as an opportunity.

Success with the Amway Opportunity requires self-belief and a self-starter mentality, belief in
Amway, its products and support – this is priceless – and an unshakeable belief in your coach
and line of sponsorship. We advise new ABOs to attend Amway Academy training and access
all the official training portals for Nutrilite. The Amway product manuals are a good reference
guide. The manuals provide a comprehensive review of the products and help ABOs provide
answers and necessary assurance for themselves and their customers.

We meet our customers where it’s convenient for them, either at their home, the Amway
Centre in Holborn or another location. We cross sell Artistry and Nutrilite as these are a
natural fit – for example, in skin care sessions we recommend Daily/Double X and Biotin C
to enhance a good skin care routine. It’s important to be a product of the products, and we
communicate the area of wellness from the standpoint of being users, relating our personal
experience and our customer testimonials. Product demonstrations are very effective and our
main tips would be: DO practise and prepare beforehand; DON’T be too ambitious, start with
a simple demonstration when you are new to the business.

24
EDUCATION

REMEMBER WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT:

1. Familiarise yourself with the products you are going to present, preferably by
using them yourself, and openly share knowledge and everyday experiences.
This will boost your confidence and credibility, since others will perceive you as an
ambassador of the Amway brand.

2. Use various materials – printed, online and digital – depending on your

preferences and needs, but bear in mind that written texts serve only to reinforce
spoken language.

3. Ensure your customers are comfortable and, if possible, meet them at a location
of their choosing (their or your home or a neutral location) – this will facilitate
product presentation and create a friendly atmosphere.

4. Remember that the ability to establish relations with people is the key to
success – it will enable you to win the customers’ trust, making them more
co-operative.

5. Continue to expand your knowledge about the products and presentation

techniques.

6. Always place the customer’s needs first – your priority is to identify and meet them.

7. Be respectful to the customers, avoid controversial subjects and leave a good

impression, even if the meeting does not bring the expected results.

8. Allow potential customers to sample the products – you can do it during the
presentation or hand out samples.

9. Always be professional – wear proper clothes, prepare for the meeting or

FIND YOUR
BALANCE
A balanced and wholesome diet ensures the supply of macronutrients such as carbohydrates,
fats and proteins as well as the intake of vitamins, minerals, fibre and secondary plant
substances. To guarantee a balanced supply of all nutrients, we should choose food from all
seven food groups that are visible in the picture in the right side of this page.

IF YOU CANNOT GET ALL THE NUTRIENTS YOU NEED FROM YOUR DIET,
THEN YOU MAY NEED TO TAKE FOOD SUPPLEMENTS.

This is a valid statement, but might not be an adequate recommendation for all people of all
ages with differing nutritional and health needs. For many people, food supplements can provide
nutritional support for a balanced diet. It is important to eat regularly and balance your food
choices in the right proportions.

However, in a modern, fast-paced lifestyle, we often have to negotiate daily challenges and
interactions that distract us from planning and eating a well-balanced diet.

The food we eat and the exercise we do can have a huge impact on our future wellbeing.
Adopting a healthy lifestyle can contribute towards achieving and maintaining our body’s
optimum wellbeing and may reduce our risk of developing lifestyle-related ailments.

Good nutrition supports both optimal wellbeing and an increased capacity for physical and
mental activity. Consider these five principles and get the best out of your body:

• Good nutrition

• Regular exercise

• Avoid harmful factors

• Adequate rest

• Positive attitude

Applying these principles will contribute to long-term benefits as your wellbeing can be optimised
over time.

MACRONUTRIENTS
Basic nutrition is composed of three main macronutrients: protein, fat,
and carbohydrates.

Proteins are the body’s building blocks – they help us grow and repair
our cells. Fat stores energy for the long term and is also a great barrier
for our cells and body. Carbohydrates are used for immediate energy,
like quick fuel.

MICRONUTRIENTS
In addition to macronutrients, we need micronutrients – vitamins
and minerals.

‘Micro’ because we need them in much smaller quantities every day,

even though they play a big role in the body by saving all our metabolic
functions. The human body cannot or cannot sufficiently manufacture
all micronutrients to sustain life.

They must be obtained from specific foods or specific combinations

of foods. It takes some effort and variety in our diet to get the optimal
daily amount of vitamins and minerals.

PHYTONUTRIENTS
Phytonutrients are organic components found in plants that are
thought to be beneficial for human health.

The term ‘phyto’ originates from a Greek word meaning plant. Fruit,
vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and teas are all rich sources of
phytonutrients. They help protect plants from germs, fungi, and other
threats. And when absorbed by our bodies, phytonutrients can help
us stay healthy and keep our bodies working properly. Have you ever
asked yourself whether you eat food from all five colours every day?

CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrates are the main fuel required by the body in
order to provide energy. The most common and abundant are
did you know ? sugars, fibres and starches.

The basic building block of a carbohydrate is a sugar molecule,

CARBOHYDRATES. (fructose), corn or grape sugar (dextrose or glucose), and table
sugar (sucrose)

• Complex carbohydrates that include everything made of three or

more linked sugars, for example glycogen oder amylose

FUNCTIONS OF CARBOHYDRATES

The digestive system handles all carbohydrates in a similar

way – it works to attempt to break them down into single sugar
molecules, since only these are small enough to be absorbed into
the bloodstream. The resulting glucose (also known as blood sugar),
is used in all cells as a universal energy source. The exception is fibre,
a non-digestive complex carbohydrate. It is put together in such a way
that it cannot be broken down into sugar molecules by human body,
and so passes through the body, largely undigested.

FATS
Fats provide a convenient and concentrated source of energy,
another requirement for fat in the diet is to enable the
did you know ? fat‑soluble vitamins A, D, E and K to be absorbed from food.
Fats are a group of chemical compounds composed of fatty
NEARLY HALF OF THE DRY acids and glycerol.
WEIGHT OF THE BRAIN IS
FAT, AND A QUARTER OF THIS ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS
IS CHOLESTEROL. These are poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) which can’t be
produced in the body and must be provided through diet. The two
major ones are linoleic acid (omega-6 fatty acid) and alpha-linolenic
acid (omega-3 fatty acid). Within the body both can be converted to
other PUFAs such as arachidonic acid (the precursor for eicosanoid
hormones), and, to a limited extent, to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both are omega-3 fatty acids.

TRANS FATTY ACIDS

Trans fatty acids are mainly found in processed food. They are by-
products of partial hydrogenation, a process in which some of the
missing hydrogen atoms are put back into poly-unsaturated fats.

CHOLESTEROL

Cholesterol is a fat-like substance. Both fat and cholesterol belong to a

larger family of chemical compounds called lipids.
Cholesterol is used to build cell membranes and brain and nerve
tissues. Cholesterol also helps the body to produce steroid hormones
needed for body regulation, including processing food and bile acids
needed for fat-digestion.
Only food of animal origin contains cholesterol. As the body can
produce enough cholesterol for all of its needs, it is not necessary for
people to consume dietary cholesterol.

SOURCE OF FAT

Saturated fatty acids are mostly found in foods of animal origin.

Mono‑unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fatty acids are mostly found
in foods of plant origin and some seafoods.
Fatty acids are molecules composed mostly of carbon and hydrogen
atoms. Fatty acids differ from one another by their number of carbons,
and the number of double-bonds between the carbons:

• Saturated fatty acids have only single-bonds and are ‘saturated’

with hydrogen atoms

• Mono-unsaturated fatty acids have one double-bond and are

missing 1 pair of hydrogen atoms

• Poly-unsaturated fatty acids have more than one double-bond

and are missing more than one pair of hydrogen atoms

later be synthesised, along with EPA from the omega-3 group,
into eicosanoid hormones (localised tissue hormones).

Eicosanoids are tissue hormones which are involved in a number of

physiological and pathological processes. These include blood clotting,

and their ratio to each other. In general, animal protein is of a higher
quality than plant protein, due to the pattern of essential amino acids
which more closely match the pattern of human requirements. On the
other hand, combinations of diverse sources of protein, both animal and
plant protein, can yield very high protein qualities as well. An excellent
source of high-quality plant protein are legumes, especially soybeans.

calcium level is required for maintaining normal bone formation, the

When not getting enough dietary calcium every day the body may draw
it from your bones to nourish your heart and muscles. This can result
in bone loss, which can increase the risk of osteoporosis.

CAROTENOIDS PHYTONUTRIENTS

Carotenoids are fat-soluble phytonutrients, originally used as

colourings and now known as nutrients such as precursors of
vitamin A and antioxidants. A few of the major ones are beta-
carotene, alpha-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin and lycopene.

FUNCTIONS OF CAROTENOIDS

Many carotenoids can give one available electron to neutralise free

radicals. Free radicals cause oxidative damage which has been linked
to the onset of premature ageing, age-related macular degeneration
and other conditions.

LUTEIN AND ZEAXANTHIN

The eyes are repositories for carotenoids, with lutein and zeaxanthin
concentrated in the retina and lens.
The phytonutrient lutein is a member of the carotenoid family and is
a natural pigment found in a number of plant sources. Zeaxanthin is
a rarer chemical cousin of the carotenoid lutein, but is actually quite
different in molecular structure.

LYCOPENE

The phytonutrient lycopene is an open-chain unsaturated carotenoid

fruits, vegetables, berries and flowers.

ELLAGIC ACID

Ellagic acid is known as phenolic acid. Raspberries are the best

natural source of ellagic acid, but it can also found in strawberries,
kiwis, cranberries, walnuts, pecans and pomegranates.

EGCG (EPIGALLOCATECHIN-GALLATE)

medicines which date back thousands of years, and India has
a traditional herbal medicine, known as Ayurveda. In Europe,
some herbals have also been recognised to positively
influence the body by having certain functions.

BILBERRY

Bilberry has been valued for centuries as a nutritious food and as

a wild edible delicacy. Bilberry contains many different phenolic
compounds that have antioxidative properties.

GARLIC

Garlic has been used throughout history as a herbal panacea, and

current research confirms its role as beneficial to human wellbeing.
Garlic contributes to the normal immune function. It also helps to
maintain normal blood lipid levels. As a growing herb, garlic has an
excellent, although smelly, natural anti-microbial ability to disable
an unusually wide variety of infectious organisms (for example,
soil parasites and plant fungi). It is believed that when taken as a
supplement, this natural defence can play a role in helping to improve
the body’s resistance.

ECHINACEA

The purple coneflower, or echinacea, is commonly processed into

a liquid or a dry extract. There are 9 known species of echinacea,
the most commonly used is Ecinacea purpurea. Echinacea purpurea
helps the function of the natural defensive system.

Radicals

1. Stable oxygen atom: 8 electrons Some phytonutrients are known to have one extra electron
available that can be given to free radicals. Free radical attack
has been linked to the onset of premature ageing, age-related
macular degeneration and other conditions.

Oxidative damage caused by free radicals:

1. While oxygen is absolutely essential to life, it can also be

damaging. Free radicals are oxygen molecules in our body that
have been oxidised (damaged) by sunlight, smoke, pollution,
stress and even just everyday eating and breathing.

2. Free radical molecules are missing one of the eight electrons

2. Oxygen atom loses one electron they are supposed to have and are out of balance. They ‘steal’
electrons from other molecules, thereby creating more free
due to oxidation: free radical radicals. These donor molecules not only become damaged as a
result, but can become free radicals themselves. This oxidative
stress chain reaction has the potential to damage every cell in
our body, even our DNA. Over time, this damage can permanently
affect our cells’ ability to recover; our skin ages prematurely and
we become more vulnerable to disease.

3. Antioxidants can stop the oxidative stress chain reaction.

Antioxidants can cope with electron losses. They donate one
electron to the free radical in order to neutralise it and turn it into
a stable radical.

DAILY NEED

In general, consumption of 400 g daily of different fruit and vegetables

is recommended to ensure you get a sufficient dose of phytonutrients.
Antioxidants are the body’s natural defence against the oxidative
stress which leads to free radical damage. While certain vitamins have
antioxidant properties, there are also other nutrient compounds, such
as polyphenols, and minerals as copper, selenium and zinc which have
antioxidant functions in addition to other properties.

3. The antioxidant can donate one electron.

Donated electron neutralises free radical.

SKIN - EPIDERMIS + DERMIS

The skin is about 2 square metres, the largest and also one of the most
sensitive organs of the human body. It regulates body temperature,
allows us to feel heat, cold and pain and provides protection against
injury.

EPIDERMIS

– the outer layer

DERMIS

– the inner layer

The skin is made of layers. The outermost layer- the layer you can see
is the EPIDERMIS. The layer beneath is the DERMIS. In this lower level,
lies a matrix of collagen, elastin fibres and hyaluronic acid that provide
strength, resilience and elasticity to skin.

COLLAGEN AND HYALURONIC ACID

Collagen and hyaluronic acid work together: Hyaluronic acid moisturises
the skin collagen fibres, to help them stay flexible. Collagen binds
hyaluronic acid which in turn binds hundreds of times its volume in water.

We care for the skin from outside. But nourish and build it up from
inside, through the nutrients we eat. Our digestive system extracts
nutrients from the diet, and our blood circulation brings them to the
places where they are needed – right down to each skin cell.

Vitamin C contributes to the normal collagen formation for the normal

function of the skin. Furthermore, vitamin A and zinc support the
maintenance of normal skin.

Supplements
Everyone has the same basic nutritional needs. Foundational nutrition makes up the building
blocks that everyone requires no matter where you are from or what your age is. Foundational
nutrients consist of macronutrients: protein, fat and carbohydrates; micronutrients: vitamins
and minerals; and phytonutrients: organic components found in plants. Micronutrients and
macronutrients are interdependent. We need a variety of micronutrients to complement the
three macronutrients.

Foundational supplements aren’t just a great way to fill the nutrient gap some people might
have, they also help introduce customers to the NUTRILITE™ brand. Start with the Foundational
Trio then look to NUTRILITE™ for supplements to meet your targeted wellness needs.
