METHODS OF TEACHING
There are two ways in which an individual learns. One is by impression—that is, he sees,
hears, smells, feels, or tastes—uses the senses. The other is by expression—he thinks, speaks,
or acts.
Mostly, of course, the pupil learns by a combination of these two. But for sake of
simplicity, we shall consider methods of teaching in two categories.
Effective use of any method of teaching must apply the three steps of instruction. These
are: 1) prepare the lesson with an aim in mind, 2) present the lesson in a way that will achieve
the aim, and 3) evaluate to decide whether the purpose has been achieved.

Methods of Teaching by Impression

Methods of impression in which the teacher attracts the attention, holds the interest,
creates desire, and inspires action by using the senses, particularly those of seeing and hearing.
 Bible in Hand/Book
 Bulletin Board
 Chalkboard [Whiteboard]
 Chart
 Diorama – a scene made in an open box. Maybe prepared
by adding small figures, grass, and objects.
 Display
 Filmstrips/Slides – pictures in color for projection on a
screen…
 Flannel Graph – a graphic method which uses adhesive backed pictures placed on a
flannel board in sequence as the story is being told or as
the application of the lesson is being developed.
 Lecture – it’s an explanation. The pupil participates only
as a listener….
 Map and Globe
 Object Lesson
 Overhead Projector [PowerPoint Presentation, et. al]
 Peep-Box – small pictures cut or tiny objects made from
wire, plastic and other material, can be used to construct a miniature scene at the far end
of a shoe box. The scene is viewed through a small opening at the opposite end. Tissue
paper of various colors and an electric light can be used to light the scene attractively.
 Picture (Flat)
 Puppets
 Reading (Assigned)
 Record/CD/VCD/DVD Player, Tape Recorder [YouTube, et. al]

Methods of expression in which the pupil learns by participating, by thinking, by

speaking, or by doing.

 Assignment
 Buzz Session/Group – a small group of three to seven people who buzz (talk) for a brief
time about a problem assigned to them by the teacher. They arrive at a group conclusion
which is then presented to the class as a whole. This is useful with youth and adults.
 Check Chart
 Collage or Montage
 Conversation
 Debate
 Discussion
 Drama/Role Playing
