2nd Law of Logarithms: Logarithm of Products

The logarithm of the product of positive real numbers is equal to the sum of the logarithms of
the factors to the given base.
In symbols, log b MN =log b M +log b N .

Applying the 2nd Law of Logarithms:

Express the given logarithm as the sum of simpler logarithmic expressions.

Example 1.) log 2 ( 4)(8)

Solution:
log 2 ( 4)(8) = log2  4 + log2  8
= log2  4 + log2  8
= log2  2² + log2  2³
log 2 ( 4)(8)) = 5

Express the sum of logarithms as a single logarithm.

Example 2.) log 3 x+ log 3 6+ log3 y

Solution:
log 3 x+ log 3 6+ log3 y=log 3 ( x ) ( 6 ) ( y )
¿ log 3 6 xy
