Question ONE (30 Marks) COMPULSORY

a.What is history of education? Past developments of educational systems, theories and


institutions within the general historical framework of political, social, economic.
Scientific and technological changes that different societies have gone through over time
(3 Marks)
b.Give FIVE reasons why Europeans thought there was no education in Africa before the
Christian missionaries came. (5 Marks)
c.(i) Define medieval age it is the era that corresponds to the rediscovery of studies
originating from the 11th century in a west in the process of transformation. The church
cast off tutelage and lay power and there was general acceptance of the church in matters
of belief , conduct and education. (2 Marks)
(ii) State FIVE factors that gave rise to medieval universities
1.The multiplicity of students and masters.

obliged the world of education to change.

Question TWO (20 Marks)

a. Describe the ancient Egyptian education(10 Marks)


The Egyptian educational system of about 4000BC aimed to foster a proper
understanding of religion and vocational skills that were needed in for trade, agriculture
mathematics and geometry to measure plots that were annually flooded by the Niles.
Egyptian education and culture was preserved and controlled by the priests who a
powerful intellectual elite in the Egyptian theocracy and served as political bulwarks by
preventing cultural diversity.
The humanities as well as practical subjects were taught by the priests in a formal school
setting.
Vocational skills relating to fields such as architecture were generally transmitted outside
the content of formal schooling
b. Explain the lessons that contemporary educational planners can borrow from the ancient
