The Compass: Locating Yourself on the Map
An expedition by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1994 determined that
the average position of the north magnetic pole for that year was 78.3deg. N;
104.0deg W. They also determined that the magnetic pole was moving
approximately 15 km per year.

RECAP ON STRUCTURAL COUNTOURS/STRIKE LINES

• They are straight lines with a trend parallel to the strike of the
plane.
• Being parallel to the trend of the strike, strike lines are horizontal
lines
• Being horizontal lines, each pt on the line has the same elevation

• The contour lines are evenly spaced, with spacing distance that is a
function of the dip.

•You calculate strike and dip if giving the structure contours.
