Ariana: Welcome to your favorite news program,.What’s News Today?

My name
is Ariana Medina. We will start with an update on the cases of police officers
accused of extortion of businessmen in Lima. The extorted businessmen that
were interviewed asked us not to reveal their identities. They told us that law
enforcement officials were the masterminds behind this unspeakable crime. We
also interviewed the pólice officers that are alledgedly involved in the extortion.
We wanted to know who had authorized the extortion, but what the pólice officers
said was that they were being falsely accused. Finally, we interviewed the Chief
of Police, who said that he had not done anything illegal and that he would
cooperate to find out who had authorized the extortion. At the police station,
where the interviews took place, we were told not to take footage. What we know
for now is that the prosecutor’s office has launched a formal investigation into
these cases of extortion.
Ariana: Now, let’s move on to our technology segment with Liah Rodriguez. Hello
Liah. How are you?
Liah: Hi Ariana I´m fine, but I am shocked by the news about the extortion cases.
What would you have done, Ariana, if you had been extorted by the police?
Ariana: I think the first thing I would have done is to report the extortion just as
the affected businessmen did, even though it is evident that we cannot trust the
police.
Liah: I know what you mean, Ariana. It seems as if we are not safe anymore. And
speaking of social insecurity, not only are people not safe on the streets of Lima,
but they are also not safe on social networks. Today, I am going to talk about the
negative impact of social networks on our adolescents and children'. As we all
know, the highest percentage of people who use social networks for the longest
time includes young people who study online. As various studies have already
shown, these young people are more likely to suffer cyber bullying or kidnapping
attempts than their peers.
Ariana: It sound scary, but what are we supposed to do? I mean, we can’t prohibit
young people to study online.
Liah: That’s true, Ariana, but according to the specialist in social media Antonio
Garcia Solis, who is a media planner and general director of social
communication, what we can do is to restrict the access to the internet that young
people under age have at home. Antonio has stated that adult supervisión is the
key factor to keep young people safe online.
Ariana: And more so in the pandemic that young people have depended on
technology a hundred per cent.
Liah: Exactly! As everyone already knows, due to the pandemic, most students
have been using social networks to take their classes and courses, which as
expected, has given young people the chance to be in constant contact with
others on social networks. such as Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. This is
something that predators take advantage of to seek victims online. However, not
only can others harm young people online, but young people who use the internet
excessively can hurt themselves. It has been proven that, in the long term, too
much time spent on the internet could generate an addiction and over-
dependence on social media. What’s more, Antonio Garcia assures us that these
social networks usually show a perfect reality, often reflected in an ideal body or
an ideal lifestyle, which could lead young people to have low self-esteem or fall
into depression, depending on how serious the case is.
Ariana: I am sure that parents who have just heard you will make it a point to
safeguard their children’s online activity much more now that they know how
dangerous it can be for their chidren to interact with others online. Thank you very
much for the information, Liah.
Ariana: And now to our sports segment with Brayan Herrera. How are you,
Brayan? What does the sports world have to tell us today?
Brayan: Hi Ariana. Good morning and welcome to your favorite sports news. I´m
very excited because the most important soccer competition around the globe is
taking place. Yes! The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 has begun! Many fans have
made predictions about who will win the cup. Among the teams that are favored
to win the World Cup 2022 are Argentina, Brazil, France and England. It should
be noted that for some well-known players, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel
Messi, this will be the last world cup they participate in.
Liah: I didn’t know that. Tell me, I have heard that many protests are being held
in Qatar. Is that right, Brayan?
Brayan: Yes, Liah. That’s right, but actually before the World Cup began, some
artists had already canceled their presentation at the opening ceremony, such as
the singer Shakira. She was to supposed to sing at the opening ceremony, but
because she received a lot of criticism, she decided not to participate in the
ceremony. Also, through social networks, many people have expressed their
opposition, saying that according to some eyewitnesses in Qatar, the local
workers are exploited.
Liah: That sounds terrible.
Brayan: It is. And now, let's talk about Cristiano Ronaldo and the problem he has,
which will cost him a fortune, almost 6.5 million dollars this season.
Ariana: Wow! That's a lot of money
Brayan: You can say that again, Ariana. What happened is that in a recent
interview, the Portuguese soccer player said that he felt betrayed by Manchester
United. He stated that the team held him responsible for every failure they had.
He also said that he had no respect for his coach because he would never have
respect for someone who didn’t respect him. Retired soccer players have
criticized Cristiano's comments. What CR7 doesn’t understand is why they
criticize him so much. He has speculated that it must be because those players
had already finished their soccer career at his age, while he continues to play at
the highest level. These have been interesting statements given by the
Portuguese player. Cristiano has made it clear that he loves Manchester, the club
he played for and that he loves the fans who have always been there for him, but
he thinks it was about time he spoke his mind.
Ariana: Wow! Cristiano Ronaldo must be felling really bad right now.
Brayan: Definitely, Ariana.
Ariana: Brayan, we have heard backstage that you will be traveling to Qatar in a
few days. Is that true?
Brayan: Yes! I will be traveling with some of our co-workers. We hope that
everything goes well so that we can give you the best sports news coverage. We
will be reporting live as we see the best teams in the world compete for the World
Cup.
Ariana: I wish Peru had been there, but there are other South American teams
competing for the cup, right?
Brayan: Yes, we have Ecuador, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Many South
American fans are in Qatar right now; some of them are Peruvian.
Ariana: Well, next time, we will see you reporting from Qatar. Thank you for the
sports update, Brayan
And now, our final segment of our program, Looking Back in Time. Today’s
story has to do with Peru’s worst environmental disaster, the oil spill caused by
Repsol. In January this year, thousands of dead animals were removed from the
waters along the Peruvian coast, and many others were contaminated by the oil.
Six thousand barrels of oil dyed the waters black. Fortunately, many dying
animals that were washed up on the shores were rescued and nurtured back to
health.
Brayan: I remeber that tragic event, Ariana. The oil spill polluted 1.7 million square
meters of our soil and 1.2 million square meters of our ocean. And what has the
society done to make it right? Nothing.
Liah: Let’s hope that justice is served one day, Brayan.
Ariana: That day will come, Liah. I am sure of that.
Liah: Well, folks, that’s all from us for now. Thank you very much for staying with
us.
Brayan: Bye, guys! This is Brayan Herrera signing off. I’ll be back again with you
next Monday from Qatar. Have a great Thanksgiving!
Ariana: Before you leave, don’t forget that tomorrow is Black Friday. Go to bed
early tonight so that you can rush down tomorrow first thing in the morning and
buy those gifts you want to give at Christmas. Bye!
