OUR REALTIONSHIP

My grandmother is
someone who wears only saree on an
everyday basis. She’s a pro in draping
and can do it in less than a minute.
She does all household chores in it and
describes it to be very comfy. She prefers
wearing oil sarees at home
Then there’s my mother who loves buying
sarees but rarely wears them. She has over
100 sarees (not exaggerating). Since she has
so many sarees and no where to wear them
she has started wearing them to her office
every Friday.
WEDDING SAREES
• Since I’m a Mangalorean, we have this
tradition where we wear Kanjeevaram
sarees on our wedding day. I’m unaware of
the logic behind wearing sarees. But I’ve
grown up to seeing brides in sarees and its
always been a tradition that so many
people have been following without
questioning. The Kanjeevaram sarees are
paired with gold jewelry and the bride
looks nothing less than a goddess

SAREE
EVOLUTION
• My grandmother has grown up
wearing sarees since the time she was
a teenager. As for my mom she had
this thing where she would wear sarees
on her birthdays or any festivals. Then
there’s me who barely ever wears
sarees. The first time I wore a saree
was on my farewell since it was the
“dress code”.
MEN WEAING SAREE
The term saree comes from a Sanskrit word ‘chira’ meaning
wearable length of cloth. It’s a piece of cloth with no
mention of who can wear it. Then why is men wearing
saree a taboo? Its okay if men wear dhoti but when the
same cloth is draped on the upper body people start giving
looks.
Infact men have been wearing
dhoti since a very long time and
it looks same as a saree to me
SAREE MAN
• Himanshu Verma also known as saree man is a
living example of how men can also slay in
sarees. When a man tried to wear a saree he’s in
the newspaper the next day

“Its just a drape and if you look at the

culture of India, drapes have always
been a part of it. Sometimes its called
dhoti and sometimes saree. So that’s
the whole idea - drapes are gender
fluid”
