BE - SEMESTER–VII (NEW) EXAMINATION – WINTER 2021
Subject Code:3174018 Date:13/12/2021
Subject Name:Analysis and Design of Steel Structures
Time:10:30 AM TO 01:30 PM Total Marks: 70
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
4. Simple and non-programmable scientific calculators are allowed.
MARKS
Q.1 (a) What are advantages and disadvantages of steel as a structural 03
material?
(b) Explain Limit state of strength. 04
(c) An Indian Standard flat section of 150 mm × 10 mm is connected to 07
12 mm gusset plate using M20 grade and 8.8 class of bolts. Determine
the strength of the joint if slip is not permitted at joint.

Q.2 (a) Draw neat sketch of weld and shows all terms associated with it. 03
(b) Explain failure of tension members in detail. 04
(c) An ISMC 150 @ 16.4 Kg of Fe 410 grade of steel is to carry factored 07
tensile force of 750 kN. The channel section is to be welded at the site
to a gusset plate 10 mm thick. Design a fillet weld, if the overlap is
limited to 375 mm.
OR
(c) Design a tension member subjected to factored load of 350 kN. Use 07
double angle section connected back-to-back on either side of gusset
plate of 8 mm thickness with bolts. Use fy = 250 MPa and fu = 410 MPa
for both member and bolt material.

Q.3 (a) Explain cross section classification used in limit state. 03

(b) A single ISA 100 × 65 × 6 mm is used as single angle strut with c/c 04
length 1.8 m. It is loaded through one leg and ends are fixed. Calculate
equivalent slenderness ratio as per IS code.
(c) Design a laced system for a column composed of 2 ISLC 300 @ 07
66.2 Kg/m placed back-to-back at clear spacing of 160 mm. Axial
designed load on column is 1000 kN. Effective length of column is
4.0 m.
OR
Q.3 (a) Define the following terms (i) Effective length of column 03
(ii) Slenderness ratio (iii) Column Splices
(b) Design a column to support an axial load of 700 kN. The column has 04
an effective length of 7 m w.r.t. x -axis and 5 m w.r.t. y-axis. Use
fy = 250 N/mm2 and allowable axial compressive stress as 85 N/mm2.
(c) Design a slab base foundation for a column ISHB 350 @ 67.4 Kg/m 07
to carry a factored axial load of 1000 kN. Take safe bearing capacity
of soil as 200 kN/m2. Assume Fe 410 of steel and M 25 of concrete.

Q.4 (a) Enlist failure modes of hot rolled beam sections. 03

(b) Enumerate design steps for angle purlin. 04
Page 1 of 2
(c) Design a welded plate girder for 30 m span to support a uniformly 07
distributed load of 75 kN/m over full span along with two moving
loads 120 kN each spaced at 5 m apart. The girder is laterally
supported throughout. Use steel grade of Fe 410 both for flange as well
as web. (Note: Design of weld connection for flange plate and web
plate is not required).
OR
Q.4 (a) Write a short note on “Web Crippling” in flexural members. 03
(b) Enumerate design steps for gantry girder. 04
(c) A simply supported beam consist of ISMB 400 and its flange are 07
strengthened by cover plates of size 240 mm × 10 mm. The beam is
having span of 6 m and laterally supported over entire span. Calculate
the maximum factored uniformly distributed load can be resist by the
section.

Q.5 (a) Write the advantages of Pre-Engineered Building (PEB). 03

(b) Enlist elements of an Industrial Building. Explain use of purlins. 04
(c) Design a beam-column for the following data: 07
Pu = 500 kN (Factored Load)
Muz1 = - 67 kNm; Muz2 =100 kNm;
Muy1 = 30 kNm & Muy2 = 50 kNm.
Unsupported length of column = 5 m.
Side sway is prevented and effective length factor, K = 0.7
Take fcd = 120 MPa.
The grade of the steel is Fe 410.
OR
Q.5 (a) A roof truss for railway platform 30 m × 12 m wide. Type of the roof 03
truss to be provided as shown in figure 1. The roofing is done with AC
sheets. Assume necessary relevant data and calculate total dead load
acting on a truss.
(b) With reference to above question Q.5 (a). Calculate load on each panel 04
due to sheeting. (Note: only consider dead load).
(c) With reference to above question Q.5 (a). Calculate Wind load acting 07
on a truss, if it is located at Ahmedabad Railway Station.
