REFLECTION

Chapter 1

In this chapter it discussed the life first of Dr. Jose Rizal, Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado Alonzo y
Realonda or commonly known as Dr. Jose P. Rizal and he is our national hero of the Philippines because
he also known as a man of skills. He was a political martyr who dedicates his life to save his people from
cruelty and unfair treatment. Rizal has so many skills that God given to him, he became a physician
because his mother has an eye disease. Dr. Jose Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 in the Lakeshore town
of Calamba Laguna Philippines. His Father’s name is Don Francisco Mercado born on May 11, 1818 in
Biñan Laguna. His mother’s name is Doña Teodora Alonso Realonda was born on November 8, 1826 in
Manila. They are the total of eleven siblings of Jose Rizal with the two (2) boys and nine (9) girls, but Jose
was very close to his only brother Paciano. The family of Rizal had a simple, contented, and a happy life.

Chapter 2

Dr. Jose Rizal had many beautiful memories of childhood in his native town. Rizal loved his town in
Calamba with all his heart and soul so that when he was 15 years old and a student in the Ateneo de
Manila, he wrote a poem “Un Recuerdo A Mi Pueblo” (In Memory of my Town). I like when their parents
told them to love and help one another. Jose Rizal learned the sweetness of his sisterly love because
among of his sisters, Jose loved most Concha (Concepcion). When Concha died because of her sickness,
Jose was so very sad and it is his first sorrow. The man he respected and esteemed in Calamba during
his boyhood was the scholarly Father Leoncio Lopez, the town priest. Since Rizal given a talent for art, he
make sketches, and when Rizal turned 6 years old his sisters laugh at him spending time for making
images. But Rizal told them “All right, laugh at me now! Someday when I die, people will make
monuments and images of me!”. Also aside from sketching Jose Rizal wrote his first poem with the title
of “Sa Aking Mga Kababata” (To My Fellow Children).

Chapter 3

The early education in Calamba and Biñan of Jose Rizal. His first teacher was his mother, her mother
was so patient and understanding, he encourage first Rizal to write a poems. When Jose Rizal studied at
private school in Biñan instead Jose Rizal enjoying the sights, he became depressed because of home
sickness. On his first day of school he met the bully Pedro and Jose challenged Pedro to fight, and later
on he had other fights with the boys of Biñan. Rizal attending painting lessons in Biñan. He surpassed his
all subjects in Spanish, Latin and etc. And when Jose received a letter from his sister Saturnina before
Christmas season in 1870 he became sad because he cannot comeback to Biñan again, so that he
respectfully bade a farewell to his teachers and classmates. As of June 1872 his mother was arrested and
after 2 years and half his mother was acquitted of the alleged crime.
Chapter 4

After a months of martyrdom of GOM-BUR-ZA and Doña Teodora still in prison Jose studied in
Ateneo Municipal (now Ateneo de Manila). He tok entrance exam at the college of San Juan de Letran
and passed. Jesuit system education were Jose Rizal belong to the group of “Roman Empire” or the
internos boarders. He took a summer vacation and particularly Jose Rizal did not enjoy his vacation
because his mother was still in prison, so he visited his mother without telling his father. His mother was
gladly embraced of her son for Jose’s brilliant grades at the Ateneo. After 3 months of Jose Rizal
predicting his mother’s dream it became true and his mother was set free. The first favorite novel of
Jose Rizal was “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexander Dumas. He had so many awards in his
schooling. The first poem Rizal probably wrote during his days in Ateneo was “Mi Primera Inspiracion”
(My First Inspiration) which dedicated to his mother’s birthday. He wrote more poems in the year 1876.
And Rizal met his first romance which is Segunda Katigbak.

Chapter 5

Rizal’s tragic first romance did not adversely affect his studies in the University of Santo Tomas. After
graduated, Jose Rizal got the highest honor from Ateneo. Both his parent’s wanted Jose Rizal to pursue
higher learning in Santo Tomas but his mother don’t want Jose to study there after what happened to
GOM-BUR-ZA. In april 1877, Jose Rizal taking the course of Philosophy and Letters with the two reason,
(1) his father like it and (2) he still in certain as what career to pursue. Rizal receive the advice of the
Ateneo Rectors to study medicine because his mother was able growing blindness. And after several
months of finishing his course he courted a girl Leonor Valenzuela a daughter of Capitan Juan and
Capitana Sanday, and sadly they broke up and Jose Rizal decided to study abroad without the
permission and blessing of his family because he knew that his family doesn’t want Jose Rizal to study in
abroad specially his mother.
