Full accountability
When customers ask, “What is the outcome accountability if
you offer us the option of combining services in a different
way?”, Maersk salespeople can tell them that we are now
taking full accountability of the agreed outcome.
When they ask about transaction costs, the salesperson can
start talking about the Total Cost of Ownership of a model.
This is another example of Transported by Maersk moving us
from a fragmented view to an integrated view.
The fragmented view focuses on the cost of the different
stages of the journey as the product moves to different
stages with different partners.
In contrast, Maersk is managing product movement end-to-
end. Different partners means that we have multiple vendors
for customers. This integrated view means that Maersk acts
as the only partner.
 2 Mode-agnostic solutions with speed options
Transported by Maersk doesn’t require that
customers spend a lot of time deciding on
shipping options where they are keenly aware of
the trade-off between speed and price.
Customers don’t have to commit to a specific
transport mode, such as a slow but cheap shipping
option or a fast but expensive cargo plane.
While they are willing to pay more money
when required, our customers appreciate the
opportunity to simply select from a list of speed
options at several different price points, especially
when the delivery time is guaranteed.
Scenario: Mr. Li is introduced to Transported by Maersk
Mr. Li wants to transport goods from Shanghai to Berlin. He is used to the older approach where he had
to choose one or more transport modes, then discuss pricing, but today is different.
The Maersk rep offers Mr. Li three speed-based options at different price points: 5-7 days, 10-12 days, or
22-25 days. The rep tells Mr. Li that Maersk will guarantee the delivery date for each option.
Mr. Li is puzzled. “I don’t have to choose air or ocean?” The rep replies, “No. If you choose the slowest
option, that will probably be ocean, but we’ll use any mode needed to get your shipment there on time.”
Mr. Li is pleased. Transported by Maersk is a much easier and sensible framework for Mr. Li. He confirms
his choice with the sales rep and places his order.
Our priority is to fulfil the speed option.
The exact steps we take to fulfil that promise – the route, transport mode, how we choose to store the
goods – become purely operational decisions on our part. We don’t make the customer get involved with
that level of decision making.
