Nick Dolan 4/5/11 Jesus as the New Moses y y y y y Messiah the anointed one Messiah was the one

anointed with the Holy Spirit to be the priest, prophet and king We will be looking at Christ as the Prophet promised by Moses o Typology Based upon Jesus of Nazareth vol 1 John 5:46 o Where did Moses speak of Jesus? Deut 18:15-19 Moses speaks of the Messiah as a prophet who will be like him The people ask for a mediator and Moses replies with this prophecy At the foot of Mt. Sinai the people were afraid of God s glory y God will give yet a greater mediator, whom the people will have to obey and believe in At the end of Deut this prophecy is alluded to as not yet fulfilled y One who will institute the covenants o The new Moses that Moses himself speask of should be parallel, yet more Must reveal God s will as in Torah Do miraculous powers through God Whol mission be rooted in face to face encounter with God in prayer The new moses will mediate a new covenant (Jer 31) o I will put my law within them, I will write it on their hearts o The New Moses will seal this new covenant of grace This prophecy of the New Moses is alluded to many times in NT o Acts 3 Peter cites this prophecy as being fulfilled in Jesus o Acts 7 Stephen cites the same prophecy as being fulfilled in Jesus o John 6 this is indeed the prophet who is to come into the worl o John 4 I know the messiah is coming and when he comes he will show us all thigns as the prophet o Transfiguration this is my beloved son, listen to him is an allusion to the New Moses that Moses said to listen to What is meant by prophet o The one who speaks with divine authority in the name of God Reveals God and more specifically reveals the will of God to men y Moses did this through the Toraj May foretell the future, serving as credibility o Prophet must come with divine credentials that God himself supplies so that we know it is God himself speaking through him and not himself Moses miracles in exodus were the sign of the proof of his prophecy at mt Sinai Throughout NT, Jesus performs miracles as signs y Jesus builds his Church as sign of himself How Jesus fulfills New Moses o As Moses reveals God s will through Torah, Jesus is the new and living torah

In every act that he does and by giving us grace through the sacraments merited by his redemption Sermon on the Mount is an illustration of Christ as New Moses y Goes to mountain type of Mt Sinai y Before the sermon he prays all night like moses praying before receiving the torah y Chooses the 12 and gives beatitudes that characterize the New Israel y Doesn t abolish the law and prophets, but fulfills them by being the living the New torah and gives us the grace through sacraments so that we may exercise charity y Speaks as the legislator of the Torah o You have heard that it was said, but I say This is a claim to divine authority o This contrasts with Moses own language Who spoke in his own name o Jesus speaks neither as a sage or Moses, but as God s supreme prophet Jesus adds himself If you would be perfect go and sell all you have and come follow me o Since he speaks in his own name as the Son, he is infinitely greater than the old Moses I have not come to abolish, but to fulfill y Jesus doesn t give judicial precepts as in the old law o The torah of the new Moses is to be universal, catholic, for all nations o Judicial precepts cannot be universal in that sense o Jesus deepens the moral law by through everything he does and the grace that he gives Love one another as I have loved you deepens the new torah deeply y The sacraments become the heart of the ceremonially law of the new covenant o These fulfill what the old covenant ceremonials prefigured Comparison between Moses and Jesus in Hebrews o but in these last days he has spoken to us in his son o Through Jesus, God s voice is spoken directly It is inconceivable that there could be a more perfect prophet than the son of God incarnate He is a better prophet than moses could ever be o Hebrews 3 --- just as Moses was also faithful Moses was a faithful servant revealing and carrying out God s will but Jesus is the son in whom god s revelation culminates Moses prophecy is always preceded and carried through prayer o Founded and grounded in his relationship with God whom he speaks face to face with Rooted in contemplation o New Moses relationship should be the founda o Moses speaking to God as a friend in burning bush and especially theophany on mt Sinai and the tent of meeting where there was a visible sign of God s presence

Speaks face to face as a man speaks to his friend Highest form of contemplation Ex 33 Moses asks for God to show to him his glory y This is not the same face to face as we await in heaven o We will see him as he sees himself y This face to face contemplation would imply the grewatest intimacy in prayer y In effect, God denies this request to see his face but agrees to proclaim his name, the revelation of God s mercy y The back the highest kind of contemplation that is still going through the mediation of analogy through his creation o Moses had something intermediate between our condition and the blessed of heaven y 1 cor 13 knowledge is imperfect and prophecy is imperfect o In heaven we will know God as we are known by him totally, perfectly o Moses too would have seen through a glass darkly Christ s knowledge of the Father Has to be greater than Moses The entire messianic hope of Israel is precisely this new moses Just as Moses starts by asking God s name so too the prophetic mission of new moses will be revealing to mankind the revelation of God s name that is based in a deeper contemplation y Moses does not behold God s face o The New Moses will be granted what was denied the first Moses A real immediate beatific vision speaking entirely from seeing and not just looking at God s back What is the divine name that Jesus reveals? y The revelation of His Father: The Son reveals that God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit o The name of the Trinitarian communion is far more profounf y This revelation is based in a far greater vision y The Gospels are full of references to Christ s seeing and telling what he sees o Jn 1:18 the only Son who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known o The son can make God known perfectly because he is in the bosom of the father An intimacy of knowledge that exceeds moses who could only see his back o Jn 3 dialogue with nicodemus Makes strong assertion of his vision We speak of what we know, not what we have heard, and bear witness to what we have seen, with the mind He indicates the source of revelation as heaven the vision of God o He can reveal the new Torah having seen the Father

Jn 6 Him who is sent from God, he has seen the Father This is why he is able to reveal the mysteries the Eucharist o Mt 11 all things have been delivered to me by my Father The mission of the Son is to reveal the Father to the new isreal He sees the Father and can reveal him in everything he does above all in the Paschal mystery Revealed to babes, those who receive his word in humble faith y By receiving the Spirit, we participate in the vision of Christ who sees the Father o Crying abba Father The knowledge in Jesus human soul according to Aquinas y Three kinds of knowledge in his soul in addition to divine knowledge, which is not in his soul o Christ s human soul cannot have the divine omnitience o 1) Acquired knowledge through human experience, sense knowledge, Possesses in perfection Heb 5:8 although he was son he learned obedience through what he suffered Lk Jesus increased in wisdom and stature o 2) Infused knowledge a knowledge poured out by God, which is essentially prophetic knowledge The gifts of the Holy Spirit The prophet would experience it in a unique way for his prophetic mission This is not a seeing because it is an obscurity o 3) The vision of God The object of our hope to know God face to face All of our knowledge on this side is through created realities that fall short infinitely of the knowledge of God 2 Cor 12 hypothesis that St. Paul saw the beatific vision In the beatific vision we do not see God through his likeness The New Moses had this vision continuously He had this vision of God from the beginning of his incarnation y that he knew who he was, his identity as the Son of the Father Christ is the New Adam y As the new adam he came to give better gifts y He had all of the gifts in his Head to communicate them to the Church, his body y His graces passed on to the Body o

He had to have these graces first since he is the source, theprincipal of the new creation y The principal thing that he came to give us was glory, eternal life o Seeing God as he sees him and loving him as he loves him y He has to have first what he wants to pass on to us y Col 2:3 This knowledge was necessary to know who he wass and to communicate the ultimate revelation of who God is, but to do this he has to know who he is as the Son of the Father y If not he would not be able to pass it on to us since he had not possessed it in the first place Christ did not suddenly understand his identity at some time didn t you know that I had to be in my father s house This is no epiphany No sign of a growth in knowledge, just a matter of fact Christ did not have the virtue of fiath, he had vision y We have faith now to give us an anticipation of what we will receive in Heaven He is the Author and Perfector of Faith by being the revealer of the Father Heb 12 All faith is founded in the vision of the Witness who sees y He can thus be a more perfect prophet because he reveals what he sees In the vision of God one sees in God, God s creation Jesus as the Word sees us in his ministry, particularly in Gethsemane y He can carry the burden of humanity known concretely y He gives his life for persons concretely known in all of our personhood y God s knowledge sees in eternity in a simultaneous whole o And all things in their singularity o Gal 2:20 I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me Christ knew Paul and each one of us individually when he was giving himself to me in the Paschal mystery and throughout his life Pius XII Mystici Corporis y

Speaking about the mystery of the conncection between the Head and the members Speaks of this vision of God in relation to the members o CCC 473-474 His human knowledge expressed his divine life Jesus human soul knew everything that pertains to God Christ has immediate knowledge of the Father y Christ in order to evangelize first had to contemplate in a unique way o CCC 478 Jesus knew us (with our names and with our whole life stories) Until we can all say this with confidence the evangelistic mission of the Church will not be able to do what we are called to do y Jesus did not know the day or the hour o Interpreted to mean that it is not a part of his revealing mission y Is the agony of Christ incompatible that he did not have the vision of God? o No o There are two parts of soul Lower part where we experience desolation y Had to take sin into himself Higher part had to see God so that he could know what sin is y Only someone who can see God can fully atone for sin o Novo Millenio Inuente Christ continued to see the Father in his agony and that the vision made possible the deepest dimension of that suffering, his agony over the horrific mass of that sin he alone can understand what it means to resisit the Father through sin Christ can be the New Moses precisely because he sees the Father
