Body Paragraphs:
Cultural Context:
Beliefs, religion, marriage, food, and clothing, are all elements of cultural context
that sometimes need to be provided in order to fully understand an author’s
story. It can include social context with the writer’s experience, providing
background information to those who are unfamiliar with the traditions and
cultures, which are integral in the reader's understanding of the traditions and
beliefs.
Historical Context:
Historical context is the social, political, cultural, economic, and environmental
situations that influence the events or trends we see happen during that time.
Therefore, if we are unfamiliar with the traditions, culture, thinking, or events
happening at any time in history, we could misinterpret or lose the meaning of a
piece of writing we are reading. Effective ways to consider historical context in
writing is to ask the following questions:
• Who is the author?
• When was it written?
• Are there any references or languages are difficult to understand? Could they
be specific to the time period?
• Were there any religious, cultural, political, or economic events happening at
the time that could have influenced the writer and their piece?
Rhetorical Context:
Rhetorical context refers to the circumstances surrounding any writing situation
and includes purpose, audience, and focus. Any piece of writing is shaped by
external factors before the first word is ever set down on the page. These factors
are referred to as the rhetorical situation, or rhetorical context. Rhetoric is the art
of persuasion in writing or speaking. Rhetoric is important because, for writing or
speaking to be effective, it must be persuasive. Rhetoric is described as the art of
discourse and is therefore crucial for writers or speakers to communicate
effectively and engagingly with their audience.
Situational Context:
Situational context describes the reason why something is occurring and the
appropriate behavior and actions associated with the situation. Context is the
situation, circumstances, or specific setting in which an event occurs. Situational
context is why something is happening based on the event itself. With situational
context, the audience is able to understand how the circumstances of the event
occurring affect those involved. Situational context describes the reason why
something is occurring and the appropriate behavior and actions associated with
the situation. It is one of the types of contexts that influence communication,
defined by the event itself, communicating differently in different settings.
