3.5.2 Mean Time To Repair (MTTR)

A. Definition:

The Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) is the average time needed to restore an asset to its
full operational capabilities after a failure. MTTR is a measure of asset maintainability.

Maintainability is usually expressed as the probability that a machine can be retained in


or restored to its specified operable condition within a specified interval of time, when
maintenance is performed in accordance with prescribed procedures.

B. Objectives:

The objective of this metric is to assess maintainability and effectiveness of plans and procedures.

C. Formula:

MTTR = Total amount of Repair Time expended in a specified period (hours) /


number of repair events in that specified period

D. Component Definitions

Repair Time The time required to restore the function of an


asset after failure or imminent failure. It includes
both Scheduled and Unscheduled repair time.

Repair Event The act of restoring the function of an asset after


failure or imminent failure. This is also termed
“Corrective Work”.
Failure The inability of an asset to perform its required
function. This excludes proactive repairs.

E. Qualification:

1. Indicator type : Leading


2. To be used by: maintenance personnel and reliability engineers
3. Repair Time (i.e., the duration of the repair) includes the time from the start of the
repair to the end of the repair. It should include time for checking the asset for its
functionality prior to handing it over to operations/production.
4. The Craft Worker’s skill level, use of proper repair procedures, availability of the
correct tools, and etc. could significantly reduce MTTR.
5. By using MTTR as a parameter for redesign, the repair time and maintenance cost of an
asset could be reduced after it has been in operation.
6. This metric provides the best data when used for the same type of asset/component in
similar a operating context,.

E. Sample Calculation:

If an asset had 10 failures in 1000 hours of operation and their repair times were 2 , 6, 10,
6, 5, 10, 1, 2, 5 and 3 hours as shown in the diagram below, then

MTTR = (2+6+10+6+5+10+1+2+5+3) / 10 = 50 hours/10 = 5 hours
