JDM Al
Specification for Hot-Rolled Steel
Bars, Plates & Shapes

1. SCOPE

JDM Al specifies general requirements of hot-rolled carbon, high-strength low-alloy and alloy steel bars, plates
and shapes of the descriptions and sizes shown in Table 1.

JDM Al does not apply to the following products which are covered by other JDM specifications

Steel Sheet and Strip JDM A4

Section and Ledger Plate Steel Strip JDM A5
Rerolled Steels JDM A8
Wire and Rod JDM A19

2. DESIGNATION

The mechanical and/or chemical requirements may be specified in one of three ways

To chemical composition conforming to requirements of JDM AO and designated by JDM composition number.
Example: JDM 1020.

To composition and mechanical properties conforming to JDM Al 3 and designated JDM Al 3 with appropriate
suffix. Example: JDM Al 3C.

To composition and mechanical properties conforming to ASTM A36/A36M and designated JDM A20.

3. REQUIREMENTS

Unless otherwise specified, the standard provisions of the latest relevant ASTM specification shall apply for all
points not taken up in this JDM specification. Supplementary or special requirements, if any, shall be specified
by the purchaser.

3.1 COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES. Chemical composition, mechanical or other properties, and quality level
shall conform to the requirements specified by JDM AO, JDM Al 3, or JDM A20 as applicable, for the designated
JDM number.

3.2 DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES AND OTHER GENERAL REQUIREMENTS. Unless otherwise specified by
the purchaser, hot-rolled steel products covered by this specification shall be furnished conforming to the
permissible variations for dimensions and other general requirements published in the latest issue of the applicable
reference specifications shown in Table 1. Dimensional tolerances for special shapes or sizes or sizes not shown
in Table 1 shall be specified by the purchaser.

Orders for material under this specification shall include the following information as needed to describe the
requirements:

. JDM designation (steel grade)
● Quality level (see JDM AO)
