APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER
DISTRIBUTION JDM A33
1 Scope

1.1 JDM A33 establishes grade designations for specifying the material requirements of parts when it
is desirable not to designate a particular steel grade that is specified by standard chemical composition or
mechanical properties.

1.2 JDM A33 is suitable for parts which have flexibility in material selection. JDM A33 is particularly
useful for parts manufactured in or supplied from multiple locations. The product engineer is expected to
allow for the physical property variations inherent in the range of steels that meet the requirements of
each JDM A33 grade designation.
Note 1 If virtually any steel grade could be used to manufacture a part, then the material should be specified as
"Steel" without reference to JDM A33 or other material specification.

1.3 The part manufacturer is responsible for selecting, specifying, and procuring steel which satisfies
the design requirements. The part manufacturer is responsible for properly fabricating and processing
parts to meet the required specifications.

1.4 Leaded steels shall not be used except with explicit prior approval of the John Deere design control
unit.

1.5 JDM A33 designations shall not be used for procuring raw material.

1.6 This standard can contain mandatory provisions, which are identified by the words “shall” or
“required”. Compliance with the mandatory provisions is required to claim conformance with this standard.
This standard can also contain guideline provisions, which are generally identified by the words “should”
or “recommended”. Compliance with the guideline provisions is not required, because they might not be
appropriate for all machines or all applications.

2.1.1 Basic Information for JDM A33Y Designations

2.1.1.1 JDM A33Y designations should be used to specify material requirements of parts for which yield
strength is the primary design consideration and which can be fabricated using a range of steel grades.

2.1.1.2 The complete JDM A33Y designation consists of:

 standard number (JDM A33);
 letter Y, which indicates that the steel is specified according to yield strength; and
 3-digit number, which specifies the required minimum yield strength (in MPa).

2.1.1.3 Requirements for JDM A33Y steels are specified in clause 4.

2.1.1.4 Information on the selection of JDM A33Y designations is located in clause 4.1.

DISTRIBUTION JDM A33
3 General Requirements

3.1 Supplier Quality and Notification of Steel Grade Changes

Suppliers shall conform to the requirements of JDS-G223. Part suppliers shall notify the purchaser of the
specific steel grade or grades initially used to manufacture parts and of all subsequent changes in steel
grades used. John Deere units reserve the right to approve or disapprove any steel grades used to
manufacture parts.

3.2 Chemical Composition

3.2.1 Content of Specified Chemical Elements

Chemical composition of the steel selected to make the part shall conform to the requirements of the
selected steel grade.

3.2.2 Sulfur Content

Unless suffix S15 or S40 is included in the JDM A33 designation, sulfur content of the steel selected to
make the part shall be 0.05% S.

3.2.3 Lead Content

Lead >0.04% Pb shall not be permitted except in leaded steels. The use of leaded steels shall not be
permitted except with explicit approval of the John Deere design control unit.

4 Requirements for JDM A33Y Steels

4.1 Selection of Steels with Minimum Yield Strength Requirements

Parts with requirements for minimum yield strength can be specified using JDM A33Y designations. The
yield strength requirements shown in Table 1 and Table 6 refer to design requirements as determined by
the product engineer. The selection of steel category and the specific grade that meets the requirements
of the individual part should be made during the Design Process Assembly and Review by the design
engineer, materials engineer, manufacturing engineer, and (if a purchased part) the supplier's
representatives.

4.2 Minimum Yield Strength Requirements

To meet the yield strength requirements of a JDM A33Y designation, the steel grade used shall have
specified minimum yield strength (see clause 4.2.1) or certified minimum yield strength (see clause 4.2.2)
that is within the range shown in Table 1 for that JDM A33Y designation.

4.2.1 Specified Minimum Yield Strength

4.2.1.1 Specified minimum yield strength applies when the applicable standard for a particular steel
grade specifies minimum yield strength.

4.2.1.2 Specified minimum yield strength is the yield strength necessary to meet the minimum yield
strength requirement of a particular steel grade according to the standard for that steel grade.

7
JDM A33 APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER
DISTRIBUTION

4.2.2 Certified Yield Strength

4.2.2.1 Certified yield strength applies when the applicable standard for a particular steel grade does
not specify minimum yield strength.

4.2.2.2 Certified yield strength is the yield strength obtained when the heat or lot of steel used to make
a part is tested by the steel supplier or by an independent laboratory and the certified test result falls
within the yield strength range shown in Table 1 for the specified JDM A33Y designation.

4.3 Applicable Standards and Material Grades

4.3.1 Current JDM A33Y Designations — Use for New Design

JDM A33Y designations and applicable steel grades according to ISO, EN, and ASTM standards are
shown in Table 6 for current designations according to Table 1. Steels that meet the requirements of one
or more of the applicable standards and grades shown in Table 6 also meet the requirements of the
corresponding JDM A33Y designation.
Note 3 In the ASTM system for designating standards, the letter "M" follows the numerical designation to indicate
that SI units of measurement apply. When both inch-pound and SI units are used as separate requirements within
the same standard, ASTM dual-designates the standard using the format "Axxx/AxxxM". Both inch-pound and SI
metric versions of ASTM standards are listed separately in Table 6 even when there is a single dual-designated
standard. This is necessary to ensure that the correct standard for dimensional tolerances is used. Applicable dual-
designated ASTM standards are shown in Clause 9.
Note 4 EN standards use both numeric and symbolic steel grade designation systems, which may be used
interchangeably. Both types of EN steel grade designations are included in Table 6.

4.3.2 Relationship of JDM A4 and JDM A13 to JDM A33Y Designations

4.3.2.1 Steel grades which are shown in JDM A4 as meeting the requirements of JDM A4-1Y50 or JDM
A4-2Y50 also meet the requirements of JDM A33Y260, JDM A33Y300, and JDM A33Y340.

4.3.2.2 Steel grades which are shown in JDM A13 as meeting the requirements of JDM A13C or JDM
A13R also meet the requirements of JDM A33Y260, JDM A33Y300, and JDM A33Y340.

4.3.2.3 Steel grades which are shown in JDM A13 as meeting the requirements of JDM A13F also meet
the requirements of JDM A33Y340.

4.3.3 Equivalent Grades Caveat

The inclusion of a material grade in Table 6 indicates that the grade meets the base requirements of the
corresponding JDM A33Y designation, not that it is equivalent in all respects to other grades that also
meet the base requirements of the corresponding JDM A33Y designation.

5 Requirements for JDM A33L Steels

5.1 Selection of Low Carbon and Low Carbon Alloy Heat Treating Steels
5.1.1 Parts with requirements for case hardening can be specified as JDM A33L steels.

5.1.2 The selection of steel category and the specific grade that meets the requirements of the
individual part should be made during the Design Process Assembly and Review by the design engineer,
materials engineer, manufacturing engineer, heat treatment process engineer, and (if a purchased part)
the supplier's representatives.

5.1.3 Heat treatment standards (such as JDV 2, JDV 21, JDV 22, and JDV 23) which are referenced on
the part drawing should be evaluated to determine how they affect material selection. Many heat treated
parts have a stringent microstructure requirement, while other heat treated parts have only a hardness
requirement. Both situations affect the selection of material grades and processes. Section size and part
complexity also affect material selection.

5.1.4 Table 7 provides basic information applicable to the selection of an appropriate JDM A33L
designation. Additional information can be found in SAE J412.

5.2 Applicable Standards and Material Grades

5.2.1 Table 7 shows typical steel grades specified according to JDM A0 which can be suitable for
applications where JDM A33L designations are specified.

5.2.2 Steel specified by JDM A33L designation shall conform to the requirements of the JDM A0 grade
selected for the specified JDM A33L grade.

5.2.3 Any grade that meets the requirements of JDM A33L1, JDM A33L2, or JDM A33L3 also meets
the requirements of JDM A33L with no suffix number.

5.2.4 Steel grades which are determined to be potential substitutions for the JDM A0 grades shown in
Table 7 may be used to meet the specified JDM A33L designation (see clause 5.1.2).

5.2.5 Steel grades other than those shown in Table 7 may be used when it is determined that they
meet the requirements of the part.

5.2.6 The inclusion of a steel grade in Table 7 indicates that the grade meets the base requirements of
the corresponding JDM A33L designation, not that it is equivalent in all respects to other grades that also
meet the base requirements of the corresponding JDM A33L designation.

6 Requirements for JDM A33M Steels

6.1 Selection of Medium Carbon and Medium Carbon Alloy Heat Treating Steels
6.1.1 Selection of medium carbon steel and medium carbon alloy steels requires many of the same
considerations as selection of low carbon steel from the standpoint of various requirements and the need
for an informed decision.

6.1.2 The selection of steel category and the specific grade that meets the requirements of the
individual part should be made during the Design Process Assembly and Review by the design engineer,
materials engineer, manufacturing engineer, heat treatment process engineer, and (if a purchased part)
the supplier's representatives.

DISTRIBUTION JDM A33
6.1.3 Heat treatment standards (such as JDV 2, JDV 21, JDV 22, and JDV 23) which are referenced on
the part drawing should be evaluated to determine how they affect material selection. The added
complication of medium carbon steels and medium carbon alloy steels is that the wrong combination of
material and heat treatment can result in quench cracks that are not visible but nonetheless
unacceptable. Careful selection is needed. It might be necessary to conduct magnetic particle
inspections, either initially or on an ongoing basis.

6.1.4 Table 8 provides basic information applicable to the selection of an appropriate JDM A33M
designation. Additional information can be found in SAE J412.

6.2 Applicable Standards and Material Grades

6.2.1 Table 8 shows typical steel grades specified according to JDM A0 which can be suitable for

Table 8 may be used to meet the specified JDM A33M designation (see clause 6.1.2).

6.2.5 Steel grades other than those shown in Table 8 may be used when it is determined that they
meet the requirements of the part.

6.2.6 The inclusion of a material grade in Table 8 indicates that the grade meets the base requirements
of the corresponding JDM A33M designation, not that it is equivalent in all respects to other grades that
also shown as applicable to the corresponding JDM A33M designation.

7 Suffix Requirements

7.1 Application of Suffix Letters

Where applicable, one or more of the suffix letters shown in Table 5 may be added to the JDM A33 base
designation to alert part manufacturers to special or additional requirements which can influence the final
choice of steel grades. Such requirements generally arise due to manufacturing operations known to be
necessary to fabricate the part or allow higher sulfur content in cases where the resultant increase in
anisotropy of the mechanical properties does not adversely affect part function.

7.2 Suffix F — Forming

Suffix F should be added to the basic designation when significant forming of the steel is necessary to
fabricate the part. Material selection shall be such that the steel grade used produces a commercially
acceptable part.

7.3 Suffix W — Welding

7.3.1 General

7.3.1.1 Suffix W should be added to the basic designation when welding of the steel is necessary to
fabricate the part or if the part is to be welded into an assembly. Material selection shall be such that the
steel grade used produces a commercially acceptable weld.

7.3.1.2 Refer to JDV 20.1 for arc welding specifications. Refer to JDV 20.2 for resistance welding
specifications. Refer to JDV 20.3 for friction welding specifications.

7.3.2 Carbon Equivalent for Carbon and Alloy Steels

When Suffix W is specified, the carbon or alloy steel grade used to fabricate parts shall have a carbon
equivalent (CE) 0.45, calculated in conformance to Equation 1:

%Mn %Cr %Mo %V %Cu %Ni

Equation 1 CE  %C      
6 5 5 5 15 15

7.3.3 Carbon Equivalent for Boron Steels

When Suffix W is specified, a boron steel grade may be used to fabricate parts if the steel grade has a
carbon equivalent (CE) 0.35, calculated in conformance to Equation 1.

7.3.4 Sulfur and Lead Content

When Suffix W is specified, the steel grade used to fabricate parts shall have a sulfur content <0.05% S
and lead content <0.04% Pb unless lower sulfur and lead content is specified for the selected steel grade.

7.3.5 Hardness

When Suffix W is specified, hardness prior to welding shall be 30 HRC unless otherwise noted on the
part drawing.

22
APPROVED FOR SUPPLIER
DISTRIBUTION JDM A33
