2 Product description

2.2.2 PCB control/frequency converter assembly

This PCB is located on the front side of the device and bolted on the chassis of the device.
It contains the following assemblies:
• Input filter
• Power supply with VCC monitoring
• Central control unit
• Speed measurement, imbalance detection
• Frequency converter
• Drive and position detection for the lid latch
The cooled version also includes:
• Power frequency evaluation
• Mains power supply for cooling aggregate and motor fan
• Temperature detection
• Condenser fan regulator

2.2.3 Central control unit on the PCB control/frequency converter

The following items are a part of the central control:
• Processor
• EPROM software program
• EEPROM
The centrifuge operating system is stored on the EPROM software program. It is exchangeable and, as a spare part,
available in two different sizes according to the design of the PCB control/frequency converter.
The EEPROM provides for the storage of current operating parameters such as speed, duration of the last run, operating
hours, etc. This data remains available after the centrifuge has been switched off and switched back on.
The freely selectable programs are also stored there.

2.2.4 Speed measurement and rotor detection

These functions are carried out using the hall sensor.
A resistance on the output of the sensor acts as load resistor and guarantees a defined signal at the process input if, e.g.,
a line break occurs between sensor and PCB control/frequency converter.
When the rotor rotates, the non-exchangeable magnetic strips sitting on the rotor move past the hall sensor of the motor
cap and generate impulses based on the length of the strips, which are evaluated as speed impulses.
For measuring purposes, the speed impulses on the PCB control/frequency converter can be externally scanned on X 187
and X 192.

2.2.5 Imbalance detection

The imbalance detection is carried out with a system which evaluates the distance between the magnets mounted to the
motor and a sensor permanently mounted to the motor PCB. This sensor is a hall sensor, in which the a voltage is induced
in the same manner as the strength and polarity of the influencing magnetic field.
Based on the length of the motor, the magnetic field influences the sensor magnet with various field strengths.

2.2.6 Temperature detection (only cooled version)

Rotor chamber temperature
An NTC resistance, which is housed in a fitting on the floor of the rotor chamber, is used to measure the ambient
temperature of the rotor chamber.
The sensor (NTC 10 k/25 °C) changes based on the temperature of its resistance value.
Capacitor temperature
An NTC resistance, which is mounted to the output of the compressor, is used to measure the condenser temperature.
This sensor (NTC 10 k/25°C) acts as overheating protection for the compressor.

2.2.7 Fan controls

5810 R/5804 R
• Compressor fan: controlled in steps 0-32 as necessary
5810 / 5804
• Valve flap, only opens when a fixed-angle rotor is used (except F-35-48-17).
5810 R/5804 R
• Motor fan always runs when the centrifuge lid is closed, continues to run a few minutes after the centrifuge lid has been
opened. Is immediately in operation after a device has been set up/switched on.
Fan on PCB control/frequency converter
• EPROM software program version 5.0 to 6.X:
(Fan voltage 12 V) fans always run slowly.
• EPROM software program version as of 7.0:
(Fan voltage 24 V) The fan switches on when the temperature is >58 °C on the PCB control/frequency converter.
It is switched off when temperature reaches <54 °C.
• With a new EPROM software program as of Version 7.8:
The fan switches on when the centrifuge lid is closed and the temperature is >60 °C on the PCB control/frequency
converter.
The fan switches on when the centrifuge lid is opened and the temperature is <70 °C on the PCB control/frequency
converter.

2.2.8 Lid latch

When the centrifuge is open, the lid is held by a gas spring.
The lid mechanism consists of a lid motor drive, lid position sensor and locking mechanism position sensor.
Normally, the motor rotates to the left, regardless of whether the centrifuge is open or closed. When an error occurs, (e.g.,
latches blocked), the motor begins rotating to the right after a defined period of time (approx. 2 s) in order to, for example,
loosen the obstruction.
Two microswitches, which are located directly on the housing slits in which the lid tabs are immersed, function as lid
position sensors. The microswitches are operated when immersion is triggered. This indicates that the lid is closed and the
locking mechanism can be engaged.
In order to detect the position of the locking mechanism, the diaphragm for the lid latch contains two magnets, one on the
upper edge and one on the lower, with opposing magnetic polarity. A hall sensor, which is influenced by this magnet, is
located on the PCB control/frequency converter.

2.2.9 Condenser fan regulator (only cooled version)

The cooling circuit contains a condenser, which the compressor used to release the absorbed warmth into to the
environment. It is supplied with additional cooling air by a fan.
Fan regulation is carried out according to the principle of phase angle control, which influences the voltage on the fan.

2.2.10 Control pad assembly with display

2.2.10.1 Keyboard
The keyboard query is carried out via a resistance matrix, which the push switch is integrated into.

2.2.10.2 Display
The display is an LCD module with driver/decoder and backlighting. The lighting intensity is preset.
The open LED indicates that the device is at a standstill and the centrifuge lid can be opened.
The SUM1 buzzer indicates the conclusion of the centrifuge run or an error during centrifugation.

2.4 Serial interface (optional)

All centrifuge functions can be optionally read out via a serial interface (RS232).
Hint!

The centrifuges can be optionally equipped with standardized serial interface RS232C and with Eppendorf-specific
interface (BBUS) (EDP connection retrofit kit).
The 9-pole cable on the PCB control/frequency converter can also be retrofitted as EDP connection retrofit kit with the
PCB interface assembly. PC communication with the centrifuge occurs via this interface.
An external PC program is also required (not available from Eppendorf AG).

2.4.1 Serial interface communication

The centrifuge can be controlled with other lab devices via the BBUS or individually via RS232 and a PC.

The centrifuge works as "slave", i.e., it must be addressed via an external EDP.
Hint!

The interface type and device address must be set using service function SE 1 (see SE 1:
Hint! Setting the serial interface on p. 45).

2.4.2 Plug assignment and connection to a PC

The RS232 and BBUS interfaces are located on the 9-pole D-sub plug.
Plug assignment of 9-pole male D-sub:

TX 2
RX 3 RS232C

x 4
GND 5

6
V_BUS 7
I/O_BUS 8 BBUS
GND_BUS 9

X15 is the mounting location and X8 is the plug for the D-sub cable.
The interface type is selected via PORT 3.5.
• PORT 3.5 (SELECT) is equal to "HIGH"  RS232C active
• PORT 3.5 (SELECT) is equal to "LOW"  BBUS active
If no PC is connected, a voltage of approx. -9.5 V must be available on the plug output (TX) of the centrifuge.

9-pole plug output: TX = Pin 2

2.4.10 Notes on operating the centrifuge with the serial interface

All functions, except "short spin" and programming fixed programs, can also be operated using the serial interface. The
centrifuge fixed programs cannot be used. However, this function can be simulated on the PC by transmitting fixed data
records.
Interface parameters 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 (see p. 17) can be changed during a run. Yet, in contrast to keyboard
operation, the run time (Parameter 12) is offset with the time that has already elapsed. The transmitted value is the new
set value.
Par. 12 = 0 means continuous run function.
For technical reasons, a switch from free deceleration (Par. 17 = 0) to a brake level (Par. 17 = 1...9) cannot be carried out
during the braking phase.

5 Troubleshooting

5.4 General error search with malfunctions

Device damage due to sluggish motor.

A sluggish motor will result in an increased current consumption. The increased current
consumption damages the PCB Control/Converter and brake resistor.
NOTICE!
 Replace a motor that is sluggish.
If any problems occur with the PCB control/frequency converter, the motor, the brake resistor or "Error 6" (overload) occurs
always check all of the following items:
1. Is the mains voltage stable? (Error 25 possible.)
2. Is the mains voltage generally too low or too high?
3. Is the ambient temperature too high, max. 35 °C or 40 °C? Is there direct sunlight?
4. Is there sufficient space for air circulation at the sides of the housing? At least 15 cm on both sides and at least 10 cm
at rear.*
5. Is the brake resistance still approx. 330 Ohm?
6. Is the motor fan functioning properly (only available on refrigerated centrifuges)?
7. Were the motor/cooling aggregate cable connections on the PCB control/frequency converter interchanged after a
repair?
8. Check whether the airflow required for cooling is still ensured in the non-refrigerated centrifuges 5804/5810.
9. Evaluate service function SE 13 (viewing error messages) to determine the cause and for interpretation.
10. Evaluate and interpret service function 8 (last error messages) to determine the cause.
11. Are ball bearing noises present? Manually rotate the motor and make note of any noises.
12. Activate customer service function 1, check the current between the PCB control/frequency converter and drive motor
during the run. <Emphasis/>
230 V: Typical value after the start is xx = 42 (4.2 A)
and, after reaching the maximum speed, xx = 24 (2.4 A). <Emphasis/>
120 V: Typical value after the start is xx = 84 (8.4 A)
and, after reaching the maximum speed, xx = 48 (4.8 A).
13. Check the service manual, customer service function 2 and PCB control/frequency converter temperature during the
run.
14. With Error 6: Service Manual, customer service function 10, current error message (can only be selected immediately
after error, using the arrow key).
*According to the recommendations from EN 61010-2-020, a safety clearance of 30 cm should be marked around the
centrifuged and preserved, i.e., no objects whose destruction could cause damage may be in this area during centrifuging.

Damage from UV and other high-energy radiation.

 Do not use UV, beta, gamma, or any other high-energy radiation for disinfecting.
NOTICE!  Avoid storage in areas with strong UV radiation

Autoclaving
Except for the rotor crosses A-4-81, S-4-72 and S-4-104, all rotors, rotor lids, buckets, carriers,
Hint!

caps and adapters can be autoclaved (121 °C, 20 min).

After a maximum of 50 autoclaving cycles, the caps and, for QuickLock rotors, the seals must be
replaced.
Do not use any stained, porose or otherwise defective seals. Also note the operating manual of
the centrifuge and the supplement sheet on aerosol-tight centrifugation delivered together with
the aerosol-tight rotors.
The aerosol-tight rotor FA-45-30-11 can be autoclaved at 142°C for 2 hours to destroy prions. In
this case note that the rotor lid must be replaced after each autoclaving.

Aerosol tightness
Check that the seals are intact before use.
Hint!

Only QuickLock rotor lid: Replace the sealing ring in the lid groove when it becomes worn.
Replace the rotor lids with screw cap when the sealing rings on the lid screw and in the lid groove
become worn.
The sealing rings require regular care to protect the rotors.
Aerosol-tight rotors should never be stored with lids screwed on!
In order to prevent damage, lightly lubricate the lid thread of the aerosol-tight rotors with pivot
grease (order no. Int.: 5810 350.050/North America: 022634330).

Swing-bucket rotor
• Before cleaning the rotor, remove old pivot grease from grooves and pivots.
Hint!

• Make sure that the grooves and pivots are clean. Dirty grooves and pivots prevent carriers
from swinging out evenly.
• After cleaning, lubricate the pivots of the rotor and the grooves of the buckets with pivot
grease (order no. Int.: 5810 350.050/North America: 022634330) so that the carriers can
move freely in a swinging manner.

9.2.1 Cleaning and disinfecting the device

Recommended cleaning agents:
• Alcohol 70% (ethanol, isopropanol)
• Mild neutral cleaning agent
Recommended lubricants:
• Pivot grease (order no. 5810 350.050)

9.3 Glass breakage

When using glass tubes there is a risk of glass breakage in the rotor chamber. The resulting glass splinters are swirled
around in the rotor chamber during centrifugation and have a sandblasting effect on the rotor and accessories. The
smallest glass particles become lodged in the rubber parts (e.g., the motor guide, the rotor chamber seal, and the rubber
mats of adapters).

Glass breakage in the rotor chamber

Glass tubes in the rotor chamber may break if the g-force is too high. Broken glass can damage
the rotor, accessories and samples.
NOTICE!
 Please note the manufacturer's information on the recommended centrifugation parameters
(load and speed).

Effects of glass breakage in the rotor chamber:

• Fine black metal abrasion in the rotor chamber (in metal rotor chambers)
• The surfaces of the rotor chamber and accessories are scratched.
• The chemical resistance of the rotor chamber is reduced.
• Contamination of samples
• Wear on rubber parts
How to proceed in case of glass breakage
1. Remove all splinters and glass powder from the rotor chamber and accessories.
2. Thoroughly clean the rotor and rotor chamber. Thoroughly clean the bores of the fixed-angle rotors, in particular.
3. If required, replace the rubber mats and adapters to prevent any further damage.
4. Regularly check the rotor bores for deposits and damage.

ME 07 Test duty in Germany (BGR 500)

In Germany, accident prevention regulations BGR 500 (previously VBG 7z) apply. Centrifuges with a
nominal output >500 W or a kinetic energy > 10,000 Nm are subject to testing.
The following Eppendorf AG centrifuges are subject to testing: Centrifuge 5804, 5804 R, 5810, 5810 R,
5810  RA.
These centrifuges must be inspected annually when in operation and at least every three years in a
disassembled state.
Rotors, with a kinetic energy  10.000 Nm are not subject to testing. Rotors which are used in
centrifuges which are subject to testing must be tested, regardless of their output.
The operator of the centrifuge is responsible for documenting and retaining the results of such tests.

These values are to be considered as guidelines. Level 9 means "strongest braking", level 0 means "free deceleration".
Considerable fluctuations can occur depending upon the condition of the device and the load. The deceleration times for
the 230 and 120 V devices are almost identical.
