Unit 1 Introduction:
EDUCATION Structure
CURRICULUM

Hello learner, you are welcome to unit 1 which deals with the various
components of the early childhood education curriculum. This unit is very
important because as a prospective or will be early childhood education
practitioner you need to know, understand and describe the various
components that make up the early childhood education curriculum. Since
the programme is designed for learners below age six (6), what they are
exposed to or taken through are different from what you will find in
curricula for learners at higher levels.

Learners who are found within these age ranges (birth to 6 years) are now
getting familiar with their immediate environment by gathering information
and forming concepts. They are therefore taken through relevant learning
experiences and activities and not ‘dry content’. If you had a preschool
experience, I believe you can still recollect some of the activities your
teachers took you through, mostly through purposeful play?

After studying this unit, you should be able to;

 explain the concept curriculum
 assess the philosophy guiding early childhood education in Ghana
 explain the goals and objectives of early childhood education in
Ghana
 describe how the early childhood education curriculum has been
organized
 explain how learning experiences and the activities learners are taken
through can be evaluated.
