Answer Key
1. Over the course of generations, mutations
could have accumulated that made some of
the insects increasingly thornlike in shape.
Consequently, birds preying on the insects
would have an increasingly difficult time
finding them among the thorns. Because the
birds were preying mostly on the "non-
thorny" insects, the thornlike ones were
more likely to survive and reproduce. The
result was a population with a high
percentage of thornlike bugs. This trend
could continue, with the trait for
increasingly thornlike body shape being
passed on. Eventually the insect's shape
became a near match to the actual thorns and
the trait was characteristic of every insect in
the population.
2. DNA
3. Those organisms that are not well suited to
survive and reproduce in a particular
environment do not pass on their traits to
offspring.
4. Students' drawings should show a gradual
extension of the insects' body behind the
head.
where thorny trees and bushes were prevalent. Birds preyed upon the insects as they fed
on the sap of the plants.
CHAPTER 1
1. With mutations occurring and accumulating over generations, birds preying on insects,
and surviving insects reproducing, describe how the modern thorn bug might have
evolved.
2. In what form is a trait passed on from parent to offspring, and, in effect, what is natural
selection “selecting” for?
4. Draw two examples of intermediate descendants that show how a cicada-like insect
might have evolved into a thorn bug.
