OGL 481 Pro-Seminar I:

PCA-Human Resource Frame Worksheet

Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

I was a barista for 5 out of the 7 years I have been working at starbucks. Starbucks is my
second job ever. My previous job was for LA County. It was an easy receptionist job. My
boss at the time always told me that I would make a great manager some day. Fastforward, I
got hired at Strabucks. I was always intimidated to work there and it was my last resort. I
didn’t believe that I could multitask the way they did so reluctantly applied. I got the job
doen faster than expected and became a storng partner on my team. My boss saw my
potential before I did and started encouraging me to become a shift lead. I kept denying
because I didn’t feel ready. Over time and after many conversations with my boss about it, I
decided to apply for the position. In one month I became a shift lead. I soon realized how
difficult it was eventhough the current leads warned me about it. I struggled to balance the
task aspect and relational aspect of being a leader. It takes a certain type of person to be a
good leader and it also takes certain skills to be efficient at this job. It is not an easy job and
most of it has to do with your people skills and your team. Some skills necessary to be
proficient at are time management, soft skills, conflict resolution, multitask, communication
and doing well under pressure. I would say I am proficient at most of these skills now but it
was a rough start. However, I grew a lot and it tought me to have courage and that I can
overcome my fears and doubts.

Describe how the human resources of the organization influenced the situation.

Human resources influenced my situation by providing the training necessary for me to

feel competent in this new position as a shift supervisor. Knowing that they were going to
invest in me enough to do the job well was a relief. I had other shift supervisors around
me to support me as well. I also took this job because they were going to pay me more
and I recently got married so I needed the money. These were both ways in which the
human resurce frame addressed the relationships between people and the organization. I
had a need and so did my store and by exchange for my work and their pay both needs
were met.

Based on human resource strategies located in chapter seven of Reframing Organizations

it states that the principles are to hire the right people, keep them, invest in them,
empower them and promote diversity. Starbucks upholds these priciples well in my
opinion. My story is impacted by them upholding these priciples because they invested in
me and empowered me to grow withtin the company. They gave me the tools I needed
and oportunities to promote form withtin. They also reward well which is why working
for Starbucks is desirable. This also keeps their employees around longer because they
enjoy the beenfits and rewards so much.

Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned about this
frame.

I wouldn’t do anything differently because I have benifited from this frame expenencially.
Starbucks has created a culture for growth and success both personally and professionally. This
frame emphasizes strengthening the bond between individuals and organization by paying well,
promoting from withtin, job security, training the workforce and sharing thte fruits of the
organizatitonal success. I found a greater purpose with the promotion. I realize that people and
organizatitons need eachother in order to function. I would have still taken the position even if I
didn’t feel ready because I had to. The mian incetive was the increase in pay but it also gave me
the experience I was looking for withtin a leadership role.
