No filter: A social media star wakes Indonesia up to the harsh realities of Covid-19
………………………………………………………………..
To be sure, the about face-in public attitude from nonchalance to vigilance can be liked to
government’s ramped-up efforts as well as a steady upstick in infectious rates. But it can also be chalked up to
the efforts of one Gusti Bintang, a 23-years-old aspiring comedian who took to social media to make the case
to Indonesian that they need to stay home.
“People didn’t get the message,” Mr Gusti told The Straits Times, reffering to Mr Joko Widodo’s call
for social distancing earlier this month. “They didn’t understand the danger.”
They do now.
Starting last week, the university student has posted on Instagram a series of videos that has attracted 13
million views. The clips excoriates Indonesians for their cavalier attitudes towards the pandemic.
“If your life is in God’s hand, then go squat down on a tollway,” he says at one point. “Maybe an
innova will come kiss you,” he taunts, reffering to the popular Toyota people carrier here.
He also lays into the baffling but common practice here of fighting colds with a practice known as
kerok – drawing up welts by scraping a coin down the back of the rib cage to let out a purported excess of air
that is widely believed to cause the sniffles. “This is not a cold, where you can just scrape it away,” Mr Gusti
sais. “If you have corona virus, the person doing the kerok for you will get it too.”

Why is plastic a problem?
Because they do not degrade, microplastics are harmful to the environment because birds and fish can
mistake them for food. Sea turtles are also affected by plastic pollution. Some species are consumers of jelly
fish, but often mistake plastic bags for their natural prey. This plastic debris can kill the sea turtle by
obstructing the oesophagus.
Despite being an inland body of water, low levels have now been detected on Loch Lomond. The park
authority wants to highlight to visitors that much of it comes from discarded waste. Litter prevention manager
Nik Turner explained: "What people don't make the connection with is how litter and microplastics get into
fresh water and lochs. We're trying to make the connection between litter that's dropped on land, in car parks
or after you've had your picnic on the beach and how that might wash into water courses."
The microplastics found in Loch Lomond are at a very low level and the authority insists it is still safe
to swim there. Measures like the deposit return scheme for bottles, outlined by the Scottish government on
Wednesday, aim to keep plastic in circulation and out of the environment.
But there is no solution yet on what to do with the plastic that is already there.
