MY SHADOW IS PURPLE

by Scott Stuart

My Dad has a shadow and loving and sharing.

that's as blue as a berry.
And my Mum’s is as pink Why can’t I love sport …
as a blossoming cherry. and dancing … and trains?
And ponies … and glitter …
There’s only those and engines and planes?
choices, a 2 or a 1
But mine is quite different, Why must I choose
it’s both and it’s none. and exclude all the rest?
I love choosing both
If theirs are straight, because both is the best.
then mine is a circle.
For my shadow’s And now it is time
different … for the greatest event …
My shadow is purple! The school dance is here!
The invite’s been sent!
My shadow loves
playing with all I’m ready to rock
sorts of toys. and I’m feeling cute!
My Mum made my skirt
Things loved by and my Dad made my suit.
girls and things
loved by boys. I bounce through the door
and gasp as I enter.
I dance with the pink The room’s split in 2,
as a turn and they spin. right down the centre.
And play sports with the blues
as they lose and they win. Blue shadows go left,
and pink shadows right.
Some of my friend’s think Once we’re split up,
I'm simply confused. We’ll kickstart this night!
But the thing I love most
is not having to choose. Everyone laugh as
they head to their zones.
Some tell me I’m blue - And right in the middle,
‘Only blue can be strong.’ I’m left all alone.
But my Mum’s strong too
so I think they're wrong. I look to the left where
the shadows are blue.
Some tell me I’m pink - They wave me over saying:
“Cause pink’s the most caring.” “You are blue too!”
But Dad’s always crying,
Then I look to the right and take hold of my hand.
as I struggle to think. “Who wants to join us?
They call me over … There’s room here to stand.”
“Come on, you are pink!”
At first no-one moves,
The teacher walks up, then a hand’s in the air …
looking rather amused. “My shadow’s as brown
I know you are different, as a big grizzly bear!”
but now you must choose.
My shadow is red!
My heart just starts racing Mine’s silver!
and tears fill my eyes. Mine’s green!
I know I must choose,
but don’t understand why. Mine’s violet!
Mine’s orange!
The room has gone quiet, Mine’s aquamarine!
and everyone’s looking.
My cheeks are so red, They all rush to join us
they feel like they’re cooking. whatever their colour.
Blue, pink and purple, and
If I cannot be purple, shadows called “other”.
then I cannot stay.
“I’ll leave and go home”. I look at each shadow,
I quietly say. no two are the same.
On each happy face
I slowly start walking, there’s no trace of shame.
my legs are like jell-o.
A voice breaks the silence … Each different and special
“My shadow is yellow!” and fully unique.
No colour’s stronger,
My eyes open wide. and no colour’s weak.
My shadow, it gawks.
A child walks to the middle, The teacher comes over
looks up and talks. as we’re joined as one.
“Whatever your colour,
“There’s more than two start dancing, have fun!”
colours are shadows can be.
I was too scared before
but blue is not me.”

“I know from outside

blue fits like a glove, but
my shadow’s yellow,
which to me feels like love.

They turn with a smile
