Haqooq ul Ibad – Duties Towards Mankind in Islam

2
Islam is not just a religion but in fact it is a way of living. As the relation of Man and Allah the almighty and our duties towards his
dignity have the utmost importance in Islam, the duties towards mankind are also described in a comprehensive manner in Quran and
Hadees.

And We have sent you (Muhammad) not but as a mercy for mankind Quran: Sura Al-Anbiya 21:117

A Couple of References from Al- Quran:

“And do good to parents and to kindred, and orphans and the needy and speak good to people (Extract from; 2/83).

“And gives his dear wealth for love of Allah to kindred and orphans and the needy and the wayfarer and the beggars and for redeeming
necks, and establishes prayer and pays poor due (Zakat); and the performer of their promises when make promise and the patients in
tribulation and adversity and at time of crusade;- These are they, who proved truth of their talks and they are only Allah-fearing” (Extract
from; 2/177).

You are the best of people, evolved for mankind, telling what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah.

3
Allah directs you to treat the orphans with justice. Allah is well aware of whatever good you do.

The believers are nothing else than brothers.

Haqooq Allah Along Haqooq-ul Ibaad:

The extracts given above describes the importance of Haqooq-ul Ibaad and if we browse through both of these verses completely it will
be amazing to notice that Allah SWT has firstly (not reproduced above) mentioned about Haqooq Allah followed by Haqooq-ul Ibaad in
the same verse.
Time, Wealth and Effort (TWE):
These (TWE) are the only three assets we all possess in this world. Of course, its quantum may differ from person to person. The real
test is to sacrifice these advantages to acquire blessings of Allah SWT. The aforementioned two verses adequately cover all the three
aspects i.e. giving time / making effort for parents & patients and to spend money on orphans and needy.
A Hadith:
There is a hadith of when Prophet Muhammad SAW was asked, “Who is the best Muslim?” He replied, “He is the one from whose hand
and tongue all Muslims are safe (Sahih Bukhari).

Imam as-Sadiq (peace be upon him) related: “Once when Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) was engaged in a conversation with his
Lord, The Mighty, The Glorious, he observed a

person beneath the `Arsh (Throne) of Allah, whereupon he (peace be upon him) asked: O’ My Lord! Who is this person, who is being
sheltered by your upon him) asked: O’ My Lord! Who is this person, who is being sheltered by your never indulged in slandering
(them).”

Travel and be Good

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: “Travel even for two years to do good to your parents. Journey (even)
for one year to establish bonds of kinship (with your relatives).”
Biharul Anwar, Volume 74, Page 83

Five Rights on One Another:

Hazrat Abu Hurairah RAA mentions that Messenger of Allah SAW said, "Every Muslim has five rights over another Muslim i.e. (i) reply
to Salam, (ii) visit the sick, (iii) attend funerals
(iv) accept invitations and (v) respond to the sneezer (Sahih Bukhari)

Good Behavior with Parents:-

As we discuss duties of a Muslim towards mankind, the most essential and natural relation of a person is between him and his parents.
As a Muslim it is our duty to always obey our parents and never try to berate them in any case. One is allowed to talk and ask about
anything in a very calm manner.
As a Muslim we should always respect our parents and specially our mother. Prophet Muhammad (SAAW) once said that the biggest
right on a Muslim man is of his mother. It is also our duty to take care our father so as he did with us when he was young.
[A person once approached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) and said: “I have an old father and mother, who
due to their attachment towards me, are not keen for me to go to Jihad.”]
[Hearing this], the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said: “(If such is the case then) Stay with your parents for, by the
One in whose control lies my soul, their attachment of one day and one night to you is better than one year of Jihad.”

5
Biharul Anwar,
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: “Every righteous child who casts a look of mercy and affection upon
his parents shall be granted, for every look of his, rewards equivalent to that of an accepted Hajj.” Those around the Prophet questioned:
“O’ Prophet of Allah! Even if he were to look at them a hundred times a day?” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his
family) replied: “Indeed! Allah is the Greatest and Most Kind.”
Rights of Husband and Wife on each other:-
Husband and wife is a beautiful relation. According to the teaching of Islam both should care each other and also live with patience and
love. It is utmost duty of a Muslim woman to obey his husband and respect him always. On the other hand it is essential responsibility of
husband to give his wife the respect she deserves and fulfill his needs. The man is also responsible to arrange resources to bring up his
children and the whole family.

Live with your wives in a good manner. If you dislike them in any manner, it may be that you dislike something in which Allah
has placed much good for you.
Rights of Poor and Orphan:-
Islamic system gives a fair protection to the poor and needy people of the society. The system of Zakat is a clear example where people
help and give share from their income to poor and needy ones. In this way the distribution of wealth remains in control and deprived
people get their right and can fulfill their needs of household.
Same is for child who is orphan and lost his father in the early age, Islam asks his close relatives to take special care of that child and
always keep the fear of Allah in the heart and mind while dealing the matters of Orphan.

6
Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The one who cares for an orphan and myself will
be together in Paradise like this,” and he held his two fingers together to illustrate.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5659

Respect for Teachers:-

Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) as a Teacher

The leadership of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was most comprehensive and dynamic.
He was the model of virtue and spirituality.
He was a noble and compassionate teacher, a guide, and a reformer. He always emphasized peace and
harmonious relations instead of fight. He built sacred bounds of brotherhood within the community.

7
According to Islamic rules and traditions, teachers are known as a guide of the nation and are highly respectful. Prophet
Muhammad (SAAW) has said that “He is the best among you who learn Quran and that teach to
others.” It is our greater responsibility to give the level of respect and honor to our teachers which they highly deserve.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was an illiterate man. God chose him to be the Final Messenger and perfect
teacher to Muslims.
Prophet Muhammad was charged with reciting and conveying the message of the Quran to all of mankind. However, he was no
ordinary teacher. In fact, he set the ideal standard of education over a thousand years ago and the effects are still being felt
today.
There are innumerable ways in which Prophet Muhammad was, and still is, the greatest teacher to have ever lived. Here are just
a few!
About Respect of Teachers.
Story - Abdullah Ibn Abbas
Abdullah Ibn Abbas was the nephew of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the son of his uncle Abbas. When Abdullah was a
youngster our Prophet would make dua for him asking Allah to give Abdullah a deep understanding of Islam and to let him
understand things well.
There was a very close connection between our Prophet (pbuh) and Abdullah. Often as a child he spent time in the company
of our Prophet (pbuh). When our Prophet passed away, Abdullah, who was only thirteen years old, was very sad.

Abdullah had a great zeal to learn about Islam so would sit in the company of the Sahabah, learning about Islam and about
the teachings of our Prophet (pbuh). Often Abdullah would travel great distances even to learn a single hadith.

8
Some Rights of Teachers

 Never interrupt him between lecture Without his

permission never talk Never stand or sit in his
place Consider him like father
 Never walk before him while your back towards him Listen

quietly his tips

 Never be most frank with him

 Always think that nobody like my teacher

 Face his punishment or angriness with patience

9
Rights of Neighbors:-
Who is Neighbors?
Whoever lives with a man in a locality or city is a neighbor
Al-Auzai and Ibn Shihab said: "Forty houses in each direction"
Ali Ibn Abi Talib said: "Whoever hears the call (for prayer) is a neighbor"
Some scholars say:" Whoever hears the Iqama (call immediately preceding prayer, given within the
mosque rather than from the minaret) is a neighbor of that mosque"

Neighbors in the holy quran

"Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), the neighbor
who is near of kin, the neighbor who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom
your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful"
( Nisa,4:3

10
Imam Qurtubi (R)
Allah (SWT) has ordered us, in His book through His Prophet, to: Protect our neighbor,
To respect his rights
To care about his welfare.
He has mentioned the neighbor after the parents and the close relatives
He says, "neighbors who are near" and "neighbors who are strangers" meaning those who are not
related to you.

Protection of neighbors in part of faith

Abu Huraira(RA) reported that the Prophet(SAW) said: "By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not
a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer.''
It was asked, "Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?''
He said, "One whose neighbor does not feel safe from his evil" (Sahih Bikhari: Volume 8, Book 73,
Good Manners and
Form (Al-Adab), Number 45).

Examples of two women.

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was told of a woman who prayed during night and
fasted a lot during day and gave alms generously, but whose neighbors complained
of her abusive tongue. He said that she would be in Hellfire.

When Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was told of another woman who did not do all those extra acts of
worship other than just compulsory (Wajib) but whose neighbors were happy with her, he said that she
would be in Paradise.

11
Saad Ibn Abi Waqqas (RA) narrated that our noble Prophet (SAW) said:" Four things bring

happiness:

a righteous wife, a spacious home,

a righteous neighbor and

a comfortable means of transport.

Four things contribute to misery: A bad neighbor,

a bad wife, a cramped home and bad means of transport" (Ibn Hibban: 1232)

12
It is a vital responsibility of a Muslim to be in good relations with his neighbors. In any emergency situation, it is our neighbor who
first comes to our help. We should be trying to help our neighbors if they are facing any crises situation. It is also important for a
Muslim to go to his Muslim brother who is ill. In this way the patient feels better and thankful when he sees people around him just
for his care and help.
It is the beauty of Islam that it covers all aspects of life while giving respect to the humanity without any discrimination.
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Among the first disputants on the Day of Resurrection will
be two neighbors.”
Musnad Ahmad 16921

Offer Relief to Humanity and Relatives:

Allah SWT says; “The poor-due (Zakat) is only for those who are poor and needy and those who collect it, and for those whose
hearts are to be conciliated for Islam, and for the freeing of slaves, and for debtors, and for spending in the way of Allah and for the
traveler. This has been ordained by Allah. And Allah is Knowing, Wise” (9/60).

O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam)

13
and from him he created his wife (Hawwa), and from both of them He created many men & women; and fear Allah through
Whom you demand, and (do not cut the blood relations) womb (kinship). Surely Allah is Ever an All- Watcher over you.

The verse says if we fear Allah, we have to

maintain good relations with our relatives. Therefore, Sila-e-rahmi (keeping good relations with blood relatives)

Would you then, if you are placed in authority, create disorder in the land and cut your ties of relationship (Aqraba)? It is
these whom Allah curses so that He makes them deaf and makes their eyes blind

Prophet (PBUH) said that person will never go to paradise that cut the relations with relatives.
Prophet (PBUH) also said Allah will never send blessings on those nations in which such
people are present who cut the relations with others. This
means the fault and sins of some of the people will be faced by whole nation an order from Allah, not a recommendation, and it is
mandatory for every Muslimto obey this order. Allah put a very large reward for taking Sila-Rehmi

14
Rights of Non muslims
Security of Life, Property, and Honor

Receiving good treatment is the right of a non- Muslim under Islam, not just a matter of courtesy.

Poor and needy non-Muslims have the right to social security under Islamic Law.

: The right of non-Muslims to be protected against outside aggression in return for paying
jizya.

15
Humble Conclusion:
The deficiencies of Haqooq Allah will be forgiven by Allah SWT upon asking for forgiveness, but faults of
Haqooq-ul Ibaad can only be rectified if the person forgives us. May Allah SWT guide us to understand the
importance of Haqooq-ul Ibaad, so that we may discharge the duties with the same fervor as we try to fulfill
Haqooq Allah (Aameen).
