Family life refers to a group of people who are related to each other. Man spends his whole
life in his family from birth to death. Family members are connected by different

ones. Thus, the family is the essential part of the society.

The importance of family life:

1. Relationship between husband and wife:
The guidance is from the Almighty. "‫"ھوالذی خلقکم من نفس واحدۃ وجع َل منھا زوجھا لیسکن اِلیھا‬

3. Marriage is a cause of mercy:

Allah Almighty has declared the relationship between husband and wife to be a relationship
of love and mercy. Translation: “And one of the signs of Allah is that He created pairs of
yours from yourselves so that you may find comfort in them and He created love and mercy
between you.” (Surat al-Rum). On the one hand, the relationship between husband and
wife is a source of satisfaction and on the other hand, it creates a relationship of mutual
love, trust and mercy between them. )‫"ولھن مثل الّذی علیھنّ بالمعروف" (سورۃ البقرۃ‬
Translation: “And so are the rights of these women. Just as their duties are according to
custom.”

• Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of
Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Beware! Every one of you is a guardian and
every person will be asked about his obedience.
• I have nothing to do with a man who can afford to marry and does not marry.
• The one who loves my nature is following my Sunnah and that is marriage.

Answer: Spousal rights:
The rights of the spouses are the rights and duties which are imposed on each other by the
husband and wife.

i. Expenses:
According to Islamic teachings, the maintenance of the family (expenses) is the
responsibility of the man. The wife has the right to get food, clothing and shelter.

ii. Payment of Haq Mehr:

The mehr of a woman is a Shari'ah right, which is the responsibility of a man in exchange for
spousal rights. "The right of wives is an obligation on you." He further said, "And give the
rights of women gladly."

iii. Good behaviour:

The wife has the right to be treated well by her husband. He should not be cruel or abusive.
Prophet (P.B.U.H) said, "‫"خیر کم خیرکم ِِلَھلہ واناخیرکم ِِلَھلی‬
Translation: “The best of you is the one who is best for his family. And I am the best of you
for my family.”

iv. Justice and Equality:

The husband should take care of justice and equality in the case of more than one wife.
Almighty Allah says, "If you are afraid that you will not be able to do justice, then be content
with one."

Question: Explain the rights and duties of children.

Answer: Children's rights (parental duties):
In Islam, it is important for parents to bring up and train their children well. The rights of the
children are as follows:

1. To protect from Hell:

Allah says “O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from Hell.”

2. Prohibition of killing for fear of poverty:

Before Islam, Arabs used to bury their daughters alive for fear of poverty. This evil deed is
forbidden in the Qur'an. "And do not kill your children for fear of poverty."
3. Education and Training:
Parents have a responsibility to provide their children with a good upbringing, education
and training.
Ahadees:
i. The Holy Prophet ‫ﷺ‬said, "Respect your children and train them well."
ii. The Prophet ‫ﷺ‬said, "Order your children to pray when they are seven years old, and
when they do not offer prayers even when they are ten years old, then order them
to perform the prayer by beating them."
iii. He ‫ ﷺ‬said, "The best gift of parents for their children is good education."

4. Love and compassion:

Children should be treated with love and compassion. It is narrated that one of the
Companions, Iqra ibn Habis (R.A), came to his service. Prophet (P.B.U.H) was loving Hazrat
Hasan (R.A). Iqra ibn Habis (R.A) saw this and said that he had ten children and he never
loved them. He (P.B.U.H) said, "He who does not show mercy is not shown mercy." He‫ﷺ‬
said for the children, "These children are the flowers of the garden of Allah."

5. Justice and Equality:

Children should be treated fairly and equally. It is wrong to discriminate against children.
Once a Companion gave a slave as a gift to one of his sons and wanted the Holy Prophet to
testify in it. The Holy Prophet asked, "Have you given a slave to all your children?" He said,
“No”. Prophet (P.B.U.H) said, "Then I cannot be a witness to this injustice."

6. Marriage:
The marriage of the children is also the right of children and the responsibility of parents.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Delaying three things is not
permissible:
i. In the obligatory prayers when it is time to perform it.
ii. At the funeral when it is in front.
iii. In the marriage of children when they find a suitable relationship.”

7. Prayer:
Children also have the right that their parents pray for their well-being. It is especially
important to pray for their correction.
There is a prayer in Holy Qur'an for children: "O Allah, make my children good and make
them a source of peace for me."
8. Inheritance of children:
It is the duty of parents to work fairly in the distribution of inheritance to their children and
to pay them their due share according to Islam.

Duties of children (parental rights):

1. Obedience:
It is the duty of children to obey their parents as well as to obey God and to obey their every
command. The prayers of three people are never rejected of the oppressed, the traveller
and of the parents for their children, so the children should keep their parents happy.

2. Mercy and compassion:

Be loving, kind, and gentle to your parents. Allah says “And be kind to your parents.”

3. Special service in old age:

When parents reach old age, they should be served and a suitable time should be set aside
for them out of our busy schedule. The Holy Qur'an says, “Say not a word of contempt to
them, nor repel them, and speak to them a gracious word, and lower to them the wings of
submission out of kindness and say, O my Lord! Have mercy on them as they brought me up
when I was a little child.” The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) said, “Heaven is beneath the feet of
mother.” The status of mother is higher than father.

4. Justice and equality:

Children should adopt a fair and equitable attitude between their parents and wife and kids.
If children hurt their parents, Allah becomes angry. The Prophet (P.B.U.H) once said, "That
person was humiliated, that person was humiliated, that person was humiliated." The
Companions asked "Who Messenger of Allah?" The Prophet (P.B.U.H) said: "The one who
found his parents or one of them in old age and then did not go to heaven after serving
them.”

5. Pray for forgiveness:

It is the duty of children to pray for the forgiveness of their parents. This is the supplication
in the Holy Quran, "Our Lord! Forgive me and my parents."

6. Continuous charity:
Good children are continuous charity for their parents and therefore children are
commanded to continue doing good deeds in the presence of their parents and after their
death and to pray for their forgiveness so that their ranks may be elevated.

7. Inheritance:
Islam has fixed the share of parents in the inheritance and has ordered that this share
should be paid to the parents.
8. Treating parents' relatives well:
It is the duty of children to treat their relatives and friends well.
