N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Jillian Ferre Date of Activity: 10/01/2022 Faculty name: Professor
Hoogasian; Dr. Kim Shea

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

On 10/1 I volunteered at Arivaca Community Health Day. This event was put on to
connect members of the small town of Arivaca with resources in their local community. I
attended the event with four of my peers, and we worked with Dr. Kim Shea to conduct free
health screenings and a telehealth demonstration. The purpose of the demonstration and health
screening was to introduce residents to equipment that would be available to check out in their
local public library for telehealth appointments. During the day, I conducted multiple health
screenings (vitals), participated in one simulated telehealth appointment, and interacted with
members and services in the community.

Where was this held and what was program/activity length?

The Arivaca Community Health Day was held at the historic Arivaca Schoolhouse. A
variety of Arivaca and Pima county services gathered inside and outside the building. Residents
were encouraged to circulate through all tables by a raffle for those who gathered all the
signatures on the provided form. The event lasted from 9 am to 12 pm, but with driving, set-up,
and debriefing, we were gone and approved for 8 hours

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

I enjoyed volunteering at the Arivaca Community Health Day. I have never attended a
health day befor this experience, and it was so encouraging to be surrounded by professionals and
members of the community who were so passionate about health and accessibility of care. I loved
interacting with the members of the tight-knit community of Arivaca and learning more about the
struggles/benefits of living in a rural community. I noticed that many individuals in the community
know and want to support their neighbors. For example, there is a program run by older members
of the community that provides free childcare up to preschool to residents of Arivaca. One less
encouraging thing I noticed during the community health day was a reluctance to participate in the
free health screenings. Multiple residents rejected our offer for a free health screening, stating they
already know they are unhealthy. I am still reflecting on the reluctance some people had about
engaging with their health, but I imagine I would have similar feelings if I felt my health was out
of my control. If I felt my lifestyle was not conducive to health; limited time, money, or available
health resources; I would also be hesitant to know just how “bad” my health is.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
Throughout nursing school, I have passionately about prevention and, more recently, have
considered getting my DNP to be a PCP. I appreciated the opportunity to interact with Dr. Shea,
learn more about telehealth, and interact with members of the community because it reaffirmed
that that is something I may want to do in the future. After reflecting on the free health screenings,
I also gained a new perspective about the impact of environment on health and engaging
individuals in their health.

Would you recommend this specific community/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)

I would recommend volunteering at the Arivaca Community Health Day or a similar

event to future students. This experience exposed me to a health setting I had not yet seen in
nursing school and provided me with the opportunity to learn more about the strengths and
challenges of living in a rural community. Furthermore, it was interesting to learn more about
telehealth. It seems like telehealth is being promoted within Pima County, and I think it is
valuable for all health professionals, including those in the hospital, to know more about the
available resources.
