Hindu Mahila Vidyalaya was one of the first institutions to provide girls with the kind of learning that was usual for boys at that time. Traders and moneylenders were known as Vaishyas. Raja Rammohan Roy began a campaign against the practice of Sati. By this time, many Britishers had also begun to criticise Indian traditions and customs. They supported the campaign and in 1829, Sati was banned. The movement was founded in an era when the Sikh Empire had been dissolved and annexed by the colonial British, the Khalsa had lost its prestige, and mainstream Sikhs were rapidly converting to other religions. The Singh Sabha Movement was a Sikh movement, aimed at the revival of the Sikh Guru's teachings, the production of religious literature in the Punjabi language using the Gurumukhi script anda campaign to increase literacy. The first Singh Sabhas were formed at Amritsar in 1873 and at Lahore in 1879. The Sabhas promoted education among the Sikhs by combining modern instruction with Sikh teachings.
