A Red, Red Rose
Robert Burns

Emotions, Thoughts & Words O, my love is like a red, red rose,

LIT 1 Poetry That is newly sprung in June.
O, my love is like the melody,
That is sweetly played in tune.

The first stanza contains simile. It compares the poet’s love to a “red, red rose that is newly sprung” and
“a melody that’s sweetly played in tune”. In which it emphasizes the beauty and freshness of his love.
Also the poet used “rose” as a symbol of love.

As fair are you, my lovely lass,

So deep in love am I,
And I will love you still, my Dear,
Till all the seas go dry.

Till all the seas go dry, my Dear,

And the rocks melt with the sun!
O I will love you still, my Dear,
While the sands of life shall run.

The poet used hyperbole to emphasize that he will never stop loving her.

To His Coy Mistress

Andrew Marvell

Had we but world enough and time,

This coyness, lady, were no crime.
We would sit down, and think which way
To walk, and pass our long love’s day.

Coyness was compared to a crime, and it is a metaphor. In “long love’s day”, it uses
personification as the poet personifies love.

Thou by the Indian Ganges’ side

Shouldst rubies find; I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the flood,

And you should, if you please, refuse

Till the conversion of the Jews.
My vegetable love should grow
Vaster than empires and more slow;

Allusions are used in the second stanza’s last line and the third stanza’s second line. Noah’s
deluge is referred in the “flood.” The conversion of Jews is alluded to in the Bible in the second
line.

But at my back I always hear

Time’s wingèd chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.

The poet used metaphor in “Time’s winged chariot.”

Assessment 1 “A Poem of Figurative”

Write your Poem here!

Simile Independent like a wolverine,

But soft like a skin.
Mind as clever as a dolphin,
Heart kinder than kitten.

Metaphor A life of hypocrisy,

Pressured by expectation.
Eyes of controversy,
Be an actor of caution.

Hyperbole A love remains until the moon falls,

Completes the day with your bright sparkling eyes.
Worries erased by the 24-hour calls,
If you left, I’ll be in silent cries.

Personification Life full of fears,

But a home of comforting hole.
A pillow to wipe my tears,
Blanket that hugs my soul.

Symbolism A Merida to the eyes of a man,

But inside, a struggling Mulan.
