Chapter 1

1. The name of the head of the family is Subha Datta.


2. The main character in this chapter is the father of the family called Subha Datta.
3. Subha Datta was a wood cutter.
4. Th father works at the forest.
5. He has five children.
6. He has three boys and two girls.
7. Subha Datta never came back from the forest.
8. The mother was worried about not seeing him again and to be left alone.
9. The father told his sons that they would get tired during the walk and then they would be lost if
the went back by themselves.
10. The boys had their own little axe and the girls a little pair of scissors to cut off wigs.

Chapter 2

11. While the father was cutting down a tree, he feels that he wasn’t alone.
12. He saw four beautiful young girls.
13. He was astonished.
14. I think the fairy was mean because every work is good if it is for the benefit of the family.
15. The fairy comment was “that is a very stupid thing to do”, “you can’t get much money that
way”.

Chapter 3

16. He was tempted at the idea of stopping in the forest with the beautiful girls.
17. The fairies can do all sorts of wonderful things, you wish what you want and they well get it.
18. One of the fairies proposed to give him some food but he must work for them in return, of
course.
19. The question about the food was: "Will you show me where the food is, and exactly where you
would like me to set it out?"
20. He really believed the fairies.

Chapter 4

21. The fairies et their food from a magic pitcher.


22. He wished for rice and milk, lentils, fruit and vegetables, and very soon he had a beautiful meal
spread out for himself on the ground.

Chapter 5

Subha Datta thought he had never been so happy in his life. He got all kinds of things he fancied
for himself, but presently he began to wish he had his wife and children with him to share his wonderful
meals. He missed his family, but he could not bear the thought of leaving the magic pitcher.

Chapter 6

24. Subha Datta could not sleep well for thinking of the wife and children he had deserted.
25. He was worried that they didn’t have food to eat. HE wanted to take some to the family, but he
was worried the fairies will still know.

Chapter VI – XIII

26. The fairies told him not to worried for them that they will whisper in his wife ear and let her
know about his happiness. His poor wife was at her wits' end how to feed her dear children. If it
had not been that the two boys were brave, plucky little chaps, she really would have been in
despair. The neighbors helped feed the family. The family got used to being without Subha Datta
and the girls forgot about him. He wanted to go back so they consented to let him go; but they
were kind-hearted people and felt they ought to pay him in some way for all he had done for
them. They consulted together, and then one of them told him they wished to make him a
present before he went away, and they would give him whatever he asked for. He asked for, he
the magic pitcher. They were surprised because if he didn’t choose anything else they would
have to keep their word and give to him what he wanted. The took him to hidden place with lots
of stones and gold but he said no, he wanted the pitcher. Subha Datta took the pitcher, carrying
it very, very carefully, and he hide it so that nobody knew he had it. His family was happy to see
him again. Life was now, of course, completely changed for the family in the forest. Subha Datta
getting prouder and prouder of all that he could do, and it seemed likely that his secret would
never be discovered. When the woodcutter was quite sure that everyone was gone and nobody
could see where he had hidden the pitcher, he took it from the hole in which it lay and carried it
carefully to his home. He began to feel giddy and fell to the ground, dropping the pitcher as he
did so. It was broken to pieces.
