1. The role of newspaper in the struggle for independence


Ans- a) In the pre-independence period, the newspapers started by some
social reformers and national leaders gave information to people about
India’s struggle for independence. It was used as a powerful weapon in the
development of Indian nationalism. It brought about social and national
awakening among the people and mobilised them against the oppressive
British rule.
b) The newspaper Darpan made the people aware of the political, economic,
social and cultural events of those times. For eg. certain historical events
like remarriage of Hindu widows, the danger of Russian attack on India,
etc. were covered in this newspaper.
c) Dnyanoday shed light on the course of events which took place during
the Indian War of Independence, 1857. It also printed the news on the
starting of the railways in India.
d) Deenbandhu representing the masses of the Indian society discussed
issues relating to the masses of that period.
e) Kesari and Mahratta newspapers threw light on the social and political
issues of that period. Kesari also gave information about the nationwide
situations and politics in England.

2. Why do we need mass media?


Ans- a) Mass media includes newspapers, radio, television and various other
new mediums.
b) We need mass media to facilitate free flow of information to all strata of
society.
c) Through mass media readers are ensured of a platform to voice their opinion.
d) On television people get to watch an event as it actually happened.
e) Mass media helps in making democracy stronger.

Ans-a) Mass media includes printed medium like newspapers, magazines and
electronic medium like radio and television.
b) Writers, columnists and editors are required to write articles, columns and
editorials in newspapers.
c) Reporters and news analysts are required for both newspapers and television.
d) Many professionals from other fields are hired to work in mass media eg.
Computer expert, technicians and cameramen.
e) Artists are required to present programmes on television, in the same way
news presenters and anchors are also required.
f) Historians are consulted for articles and programmes based on history.

Q1. Any information received through mass media needs to be reviewed
critically.
Ans- a) Mass media is a field of mass communication. It gives information
about the various political, social, cultural and economic events which take
place within or outside the country.
b) This means that it enables free flow of information to all strata of the society.
c) However, the news or information one receives through mass media might
sometimes not represent the exact truth. We need to scan it very carefully.
d) There is a very famous event of unauthentic information appearing in print in
Germany.
e) ‘Stern’ a German weekly magazine had purchased a number of so called
handwritten diaries of Adolf Hitler.
f) It sold them to various publication companies.
g) The diaries were verified for their authenticity and subsequently the news
appeared in print.
h) However later those diaries were proved to be forged.
i) It becomes clear from this example that we need to be very careful about the
information published by the media.

Ans- a) Television is an audio-visual medium. It overcomes the limitations of a
radio and newspaper and shows the actual visuals of an event whether national
or international to people.
b) It makes it possible for the people to watch all national and international
events sitting at home.
c) Channels like Discovery, History, National Geographic etc. have enabled
people to view the historical and geographical wonders at home.
d) The mythological and historical serials like Ramayana and Mahabharata
attract a very large audience. These programmes are both entertaining and
informative.
e) Discussions on social problems, education, economic conditions and political
events are viewed by the people.
f) Besides this there are many other programmes shown on television.
g) There is no alternative to television for watching an event as it actually
happened.
h) Therefore, television is the most popular medium.

4.1 Explain the objectives of newspapers.
Ans- The main objectives of the newspapers are as follows:-
a) To keep the reader up-to date with local, national and international news.
b) To provide information about the current events, on issues of social, political,
economic, cultural and technological importance through news, articles and
advertisements.
c) Newspapers fulfil their role as the fourth column of democracy by creating
awareness and becoming a medium of mass education.
d) To produce supplements towards the end of the year that take an overview of
the important events of the year.
e) To entertain people through cartoons, puzzles, humour stories etc.

4.2 How is history helpful in the planning of Akashvani programmes?


Ans- History is helpful in the planning of the Akashvani programmes in the
following ways:-
a) The speeches delivered by every year by all the Prime Ministers of India are
recorded and preserved by Akashvani. These recordings are then broadcasted on
certain important occasions.
b) Akashvani invites historians as experts for discussions on various occasions
such as the anniversaries of birth and death of national leaders, anniversaries of
historical events etc.
c) Programmes like ‘On this day in History’, and to give lectures on the work
done by various national leaders are an integral part of the daily programmes of
Akashvani for which knowledge of history is essential.
d) So, history is essential in planning radio programmes.
