Diversity in Workplace – Thinking Hats

Activity Sheet

Instruction:
Answer the Thinking Hats questions based on Janet Stovall’s TED Talk “How to Get Serious About
Diversity and Inclusivity in the workplace”.

White Hat What evidence, findings, and beliefs were presented in the speech regarding
(Factual Hat) diversity and inclusivity in the workplace? Elaborate your answer.
When it comes to diversity, the workplace should be 13% black and 18% Hispanic,
but according to her data, inclusion is much more important in the workplace, so a
diverse company should accept 30% of people of other races. It has been claimed
that ethnically diverse companies perform 33% better than the average and enjoy
24% higher revenue growth. However, some large corporations are consistently
90% white and the majority of them are male.

Red Hat How do you feel about listening to the points shared by the speaker? Why did you
(Emotional feel that way? What made you feel that way?
Hat) I've been open about diversity and inclusion at big companies, so I agree with
everything she said. I felt that I should deliberately address racism starting today.
Because racism will never end unless we become sensitive. All of us today have
great potential to achieve if we deliberately address some form of racism in our
work. This is because I feel that it has been a long time since people of different
generations have been accepted. It's been unfair for so long and I feel it needed to
change. Because everyone can be a leader and they can be something big.

Black Hat What could be the dangers, problems, or challenges associated to diversity and
(Critical Hat) inclusivity in the workplace based on the speaker? How can these factors create
inefficiency in the workplace?
The problem is that most companies are 90% white and most of them are men.
This is based on data showing that a diverse company is significantly more
productive in the workplace, but that's not the only problem. Unfair situations can
arise because of their race, and productivity is limited when the business world
works the way things work.

Yellow Hat What are the points that you agree with the speaker? What are the positive points
(Optimistic shared by the speaker in terms of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace? How
Hat) can these become helpful in the workplace?
I agree that diversity makes a company much more productive and allows tasks to
be completed faster, as I find it difficult to accept only certain races. As such,
people feel safe and comfortable in the midst of diversity at work, and feel better
when they receive the same level of respect and recognition. Once you get used
to that mindset, you can share it outside of work. I mostly agree with her that
companies and businesses should practice diversity because her community has
the most people.
Green Hat What suggestions do you have to improve the diversity and inclusivity in the
(Creative Hat) workplace? You can answer this in the context of a meeting in a workplace where
everyone is involved and present. Elaborate
Create more inclusive workplace policies, such as offering to hire employees for
their skills and abilities rather than their race, and honoring traditions by offering
unique vacations.

Blue Hat Provide a situation when you worked/collaborated with other people and
(Contextualizatio relate the occurrences to the points shared by the speaker on diversity and
n Hat) inclusivity. They can be formal or informal work/collaborations in FEU or
elsewhere. Validate the speaker’s claims in relation to your experiences.
I haven't been to any meetings, but I have read articles about how a
company's lack of diversity can lead to discrimination against others and
bullying by coworkers, which can result in a toxic workplace where it is
thought that only some people will ever succeed. For instance, in one article I
read, the company was primarily made up of men who consistently
undervalued women. At one point, a man was even promoted. To even think
that only men have the ability to be leaders is outrageously unfair

Purple Hat What important learning insights can you derive from the reading? How will you
(Ownership use these in your personal and professional endeavors?
Hat) I realized that being open-minded and single-minded about racism is different
because it is easy to be open-minded about racism by just accepting that it should
not be tolerated but by being single-minded it is urging me to do something that
can help to change the thinking of other people about racism and influence others
to by doing something about it.
