everyone. The appliance enables us to steam iron our clothes so that they look fresh
and crisp when we wear them. However since this appliance is used so often it can
develop certain problems from time to time. But before you take a decision on how to
solve these problems, you must know what they are and be prepared for them. This
article will help you learn about the most common steam iron problems and their
respective solutions:
1. Mineral build-up
This is one of the most common steam iron problems and can lead to decreasing the
life expectancy of your appliance. What happens is that the water that you use in it may
be hard and can contain certain minerals which may deposit in the lines and vents of
your iron. These may then block the discharge of the steam coming from the iron and
may lead to dripping. To avoid this, use distilled or filtered water only and one used,
empty the water from the tank. To clean the build-up, you can make use of a
commercial cleaner for lime or calcium removal.
2. Spotting
Another common steam iron problem that you can counter is the problem of spotting. If
your steam iron is overfilled, then it will leave a stream of water from the ports which the
appliance is in its position to be used. The water that drips or falls can lead to water
spots on the clothes which may appear bad. The best solution for this problem is to
avoid filling the iron to the top and leave some room. Stop before you reach the
maximum recommended level.
You may have also come across the issue of the steam iron not heating. This is yet
another very common steam iron problem. To check the cause of this issue, you must
first ensure that the power cord is properly connected and switched on. Next check the
electrical cord and the thermostat. Correct the thermostat setting and check the heating
again. If it is not working properly, then this could be an issue and the cause of iron not
heating. Get it replaced by contacting a professional electrician.
4. Iron sticks to fabric
A lot of people have also experienced the situation when the steam iron sticks to the
fabric. In this case, the issue may be with the soleplate. The first thing you need to do
is to clean the soleplate. Clean the tank by making use of a commercial cleaner and
make sure you use only distilled water for this. However if the problem persists, the
soleplate may be faulty and you may have to get it replaced.
PROBLEM: One of the most common troubles with dry irons is iron not heating enough.
The possible causes for this could be wrong thermostat setting, problem with electric
connections, problem with the power switch etc.
SOLUTION: Thus to resolve this problem, you first need to check if you have made all
the connections properly and in accordance with the user manual. Check the power
switch, the plug and the thermostat as well. The thermostat is that element of an iron
which helps control the temperature and the mode. If it is set at the wrong temperature,
in particular a lower one, then the iron may not heat enough. So make sure you turn it to
a reasonably higher setting. Moreover, try changing the heating mode to see whether
the heat increases.
PROBLEM: Not heating enough and not working altogether are different issues. One
common problem that people face is dry iron not working.
SOLUTION: If your dry iron is not working at all then in that case you need to check the
power cord first. If the cord is broken or damaged in any way, then this could be a cause
of the appliance not working at all. Also try changing the plug into another power outlet
to check whether the issue is with the outlet or the iron. Some other reasons why your
dry iron may not be working could be wrong iron setting for example auto-off setting,
limescale deposits on the soleplate and others
PROBLEM: Any kind of iron can experience issues with the sole plate. Over a period of
time and usage, a sole plate can get dirty and its holes can get clogged. This may affect
its heating and overall performance.
SOLUTION: It is thus important to clean and maintain the sole plate on a regular basis.
For this, you must first remove any particles you see on the sole plate with your hand.
After that, take a cloth, dampen it and put some salt on it. Now rub this cloth on the
bottom of the iron to remove stains and marks. You can remove burn marks by directly
sprinkling some oven cleaner and leave there for some time before washing with cold
water.
SOLUTION: In this case, make sure you clean your soleplate properly. You can do so
first making a paste of 1 tablespoon water and 2 tablespoon baking soda. Apply this to
the soleplate and use it for wiping the iron clean, cleaning steam holes and
Does your iron keep sticking to your favourite clothes and ruining them? This generally happens if
the temperature setting has not been adjusted as per the fabric of your clothes. Not only that, even
after adjusting it if you don’t wait for a couple of minutes and immediately start ironing, it could cause
your clothes to stick to the hot iron.
This has a relatively simple solution: Always start low. If you are unsure of the right setting, then
make sure you start at a low temperature and work your way up to ensure that the heat doesn’t end
up burning your clothes. Also, make sure to avoid direct contact with zippers, buttons, etc to prevent
getting scratches on the soleplate. This could ruin the non-stick coating and make it difficult to get a
clean, even press.
To tackle this very problem, Crompton introduced the Instaglide dry iron. It comes with 6 Fabric
setting and also has a durable scratch-resistant and Non-Stick coating which prevents the iron from
sticking to your favourite clothes.
2. Is it difficult to get a smooth press and iron your clothes properly?
Sometimes, in spite of making sure the iron is set at the right temperature and setting, your clothes
don’t look as crisp and well-pressed as you would like. To avoid the crumpled effect and get a
smooth press, try using a water spray. Spraying water on the clothes helps moisten the garment
molecules and makes it more malleable. This makes it easier to straighten any creases formed with
just a few strokes of the iron.
We know that switching to a spray while ironing can get quite tiring, so Crompton introduced a range
of Steam irons which comes with an in-built water spray feature. This will help you get the best result
with maximum convenience!
To help find a solution to this problem, Crompton introduced its Instaglide iron which comes with a
larger and more curved soleplate so you can get a seamless ironing experience.
4. Does your iron have a build-up of calcium around the steam holes?
While using a steam iron, the process of filling in water before use is crucial. But once you are done,
what should you do? Ideally, you should get rid of the water because it can lead to a build-up of dirt
and minerals. Prolonged exposure to minerals like calcium start blocking the steam holes which
degrades the performance of the iron over time. So, make sure to regularly clean your soleplate with
water and a fresh cloth to extend the lifetime of your iron further and prevent any future visits to the
repair shop.
To make your iron more durable in the long run, Crompton introduced the Pyro steam iron which
comes with its own Self-Clean function. This helps get rid of any calcium and keeps the iron clean.
