“The Day I Met My Local Hero”

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always longed for that closeness a family is supposed
to share. I’ve longed for that unbreakable bond you see on television with families who are
always together and always assisting each other. My family doesn’t have much in common.
Everything from our personal preferences to our choice in music is different. My grandparents
prefer old Bollywood and classical songs while my father prefers reggae and Soca music but on
the other hand, I don’t have a preference for music. As long as the song can get me grooving to
the beat, I'd instantly fall in love with it. Most of the songs I enjoy uses the guitar, specifically
the electronic guitar to spice up the beat. Ever since I realized that, I’ve wished to learn how to
play. I’ve even thought about starting a family band with my cousins; if only we were close
enough for that.
Year round, Soca and reggae blasts from the speakers of our car. While all of the Soca
artistes are great, only one can get me dancing and singing. Perhaps it was the fact that it’s a
family band that drew me in but Kes the Band has always been my favourite. It wasn’t only the
family band concept that drew me in but also his melodic voice and charming ways.
The familiar tune of one of Kes’s more popular songs, “Hello” filled my ears. From the
backseat of our car, I saw my aunt dancing and singing along passionately to the trendy song.
