1) Jackie hinkson
Donald “Jackie” Hinkson is a Trinidadian painter and drawer who studied abroad. He
was born in ‘Cobo Town’, Port of Spain on September 14th, 1942 and is currently 80
years old. Jackie Hinkson practiced in Paris at the Academie Julien from 1963 to 1964
and in Canada at the University of Alberta from 1965 to 1970. At a young age, he was
influenced by the work of Cézanne, Turner and Winslow Homer. His father was a
Travelling Officer for the Colonial Government. Because his father often travelled
from place to place, Hinkson and his brothers often accompanied him. It is during
these travels around the country where he was first influenced in his art work.

3) karen sylvester
Karen Sylvester was born on March 15th, 1965. She received a secondary education at
Holy Name Convent where she obtained an A level certificate in Art. After she left
school, Karen wanted to pursue a career in Art. To achieve her goal, she began
reading any book on Art that she could find, especially ones on the European artists
like Monet and Cézanne as well as by studying the work of local artists such as
Cazabon and Hinkson. Over the past ten years, she has been exhibiting her work both
locally and internationally. Although she works with many different media, Acrylic is
her favourite medium as it is fast-drying. Karen’a artwork mainly comprise of the
environment.It is the artist's hope that she could evoke an awareness of something
unnoticed or forgotten in our surroundings and that her paintings will invite viewers
to move into the scene within the picture frames, only to return with renewed love and
respect for our natural environment.
Sir LeRoy Clarke was born on November 7th, 1938 in Belmont, Port of Spain and died
on July 27th, 2021. He was a visual artist, poet, lecturer, philosopher and Orisha leader.
He is considered to be one of Trinidad and Tobago’s finest contemporary artists. He
was the first to be conferred the title of Master Artist by The National Museum and
Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago in 1998. He was a self-taught visual artist. The
rituals of Shango Yard, Hindu Ceremonies, Hosay celebrations, Shouter Baptists and
Pan all exposed him to the varying culture of Trinidad and Tobago and has been
proven to be a fundamental part in the Integrity of his Art.
Boscoe Holder was born in Port of Spain in 1923 and died on April 21st, 2007 at his
home in Newtown, Port of Spain. At the age of five, he started to paint. He was also
an accomplished pianist at a young age and played for wealthy French-Creole,
Chinese and Portuguese immigrants at their functions by the age of nine. He formed
his own dance company when he was in his late teens and used traditional
Afro-Caribbean dances such as Shango, bongo and bélé. He often used his dancers as
models. At the end of the 1960’s Boscoe returned to Trinidad from England where he
danced and played the piano. Here, he established himself as one of the top painters,
not only in Trinidad but in the Caribbean as well.

8) althea Mcnish
Althea McNish was a Trinidadian textile designer. She was born on May 15th, 1924 in
Port of Spain and died on April 16th, 2020 in London, United Kingdom. She moved to
Britain in the 1950’s to earn a reputation. She was one of the first woman of African
descent to receive international recognition for her achievements in design. She was
responsible for the creation of some of the most popular fabrics of the 20th century.
Carlisle Chang was born on April 21st, 1921 in San Juan, Trinidad and died on May 1st,
2001 in Woodbrook, Port of Spain. He began his career as an artist by painting and
received his early education with a correspondence course at the Washington School
of Art. He switched to Photography for ten years and obtained a Master’s Certificate
from the New York Institute of Photography. He returned to painting and won a
British Council scholarship to study poetry, painting and mural painting at the LCC
Central School of Arts and Crafts in England. In 1950, he left Trinidad to go to
England and received his diploma in 1953. Then, he went to Italy to complete studies
in ceramics and mural painting after winning an Italian Government scholarship to
attend the Instituto Statale d’Arte for Ceramics in Italy. In 1954, he returned to
Trinidad and opened his own painting studio in 1955. He then proceeded to do art
work for Carnival bands and numerous dance and theatre productions.
Esther Griffith is a painter who was born and lives in Trinidad. She studied Visual
Arts at the University of the West Indies, U.W.I, in St. Augustine. Most of her
paintings are portraits which she displays like masks, resulting in a contrast of
hyper-realism and abstraction. She layers her paints on each other to create rich, deep,
vibrant and expressive colours.
