II. What You Need to Know

A Quadratic Inequality is an inequality that contains a polynomial of

degree 2 and can be written in any of the following forms:

𝑎𝑥 2 +𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 > 0
𝑎𝑥 2 +𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 < 0

𝑎𝑥 2 +𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 ≥ 0
𝑎𝑥 2 +𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 ≤ 0

Symbol Words Example

> greater than 𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 > 2

< less than 7𝑥 2 < 28

≥ greater than or equal to 5 ≥ 𝑥2 − 𝑥

≤ less than or equal to 2𝑦2 + 1 ≤ 7𝑦

4
A. Solving Quadratic Inequality algebraically
Step 1. Change the inequality to standard form of quadratic equation (ax 2 + bx
+ c = 0).

Example : Find the solution set of 𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 +12 > 0.

𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 +12 = 0
Step 2. Find the value of x by using any of the 4 methods in solving quadratic
equation.

(𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 + 4) = 0 using Factoring method

𝑥 + 3 = 0; 𝑥 + 4 = 0
𝑥 = − 3; 𝑥 = −4

Step 3. Make 3 intervals.

𝑥 < -4, -4 < 𝑥 < -3 , 𝑥 > -3

Step 4. Solve to test a number from each interval against the inequality.

a.)If 𝑥 < −4
let 𝑥 = −5

𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 12 > 0
−52 + 7(−5) + 12 > 0
25 + (−35) + 12 > 0

-10 + 12 > 0
2 > 0
True

b.)𝐼𝑓 − 4 < 𝑥 < −3

𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑥 = −3.5

𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 12 > 0
−3.52 + 7(−3.5) + 12 > 0
12.25 + (−24.5) + 12 > 0
5
-12.25 + 12 > 0
−0.25 > 0 𝐹𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑒
c.)𝐼𝑓 𝑥 > −3
𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑥 = 0

𝑥 2 + 7𝑥 + 12 > 0
02 + 7(0) + 12 > 0
0 + 0 + 12 > 0
12 > 0
𝑇𝑟𝑢𝑒

Step 5. Test also the points 𝑥 = −4, 𝑥 = −3 by using the given inequality.

a.) 𝐼𝑓 𝑥 = −4 b.) 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 = −3
−42 + 7(−4) + 12 > 0 − 32 + 7 (−3) + 12 > 0

16 + (−28) + 12 > 0 9 + (-21) + 12 > 0

-12 + 12 > 0 −12 + 12 > 0

0 > 0 0 > 0
𝐹𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑒 𝐹𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑒
Step 6. Plot the corresponding points on the number line. Hollow circles are used
in the graph to show that -3 and -4 are not part of the solution set. Bold circles if
they are part of the solutions.

Step 7. Write the solution set.

{ 𝑥 ∶ 𝑥 < −4 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 > −3 }

6
B. Solving Quadratic Inequality graphically
The solution set of quadratic inequality in two variables can be
determined graphically.
Steps in solving quadratic inequality in two variables by graphing:

Example: Find the solution set of 𝑦 < 𝑥 2 +3𝑥 +2 by graphing.

Step 1. Write the inequality to its corresponding equation. 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 +3𝑥 + 2

Step 2. Construct table of values for x and y.

𝑥 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2
𝑦 12 6 2 0 0 2 6 12

a.) 𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑥 = 0 b.) 𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑥 = −1

𝑦 < 𝑥 2 +3𝑥 + 2 𝑦 < 𝑥 2 +3𝑥 + 2

𝑦 = 02 + 3(0) + 2 𝑦 = −12 + 3(−1) + 2

𝑦 = 0 + 0 + 2 𝑦 = 1 − 3 + 2
𝑦 = 2 𝑦 = 0

c.) 𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑥 = −2 d.) 𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑥 = −3

𝑦 < 𝑥 2 +3𝑥 + 2 𝑦 < 𝑥 2 +3𝑥 + 2

𝑦 = −22 + 3 ( −2 ) + 2 𝑦 = −32 + 3 ( −3 ) + 2
𝑦 = 4 −6 + 2 𝑦 = 9– 9 + 2
𝑦 = 0 𝑦 = 2

Checking:
a.)Choose a point outside a parabola
𝐿𝑒𝑡 𝑥 = 0, 𝑦 = 0

𝑦 < 𝑥 2 +3𝑥 + 2
7
0 < 0 2 +3(0) + 2
0 < 0 + 0 + 2
0 < 2
True

Step 3. Use the points to graph a parabola.

( Note: *use broken line to represent the parabola if the given inequality is

< or >.
* use solid line to represent the parabola if the given inequality is ≤ or ≥ .

*Shade the region if the point used in checking satisfies the given
inequality. If not, shade the other region).

Step 4. Write the solution set.

{ 𝒙 ∶ 𝒙 < −𝟐 𝒐𝒓 𝒙 > −𝟏 }

8
REMEMBER:
• The Greater Than Inequality
0 > 𝑎𝑥² + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
Solution: {𝑥| 𝑟1 < 𝑥 < 𝑟2 }

• The Less Than Inequality

0 < 𝑎𝑥² + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
Solution: {𝑥| 𝑥 < 𝑟1 or 𝑥 > 𝑟2 }

• The Greater Than Inequality

0 ≥ 𝑎𝑥² + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
Solution: {𝑥| 𝑟1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 𝑟2 }

• The Less Than Inequality

0 ≤ 𝑎𝑥² + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐
Solution: {𝑥| 𝑥 ≤ 𝑟1 or 𝑥 ≥ 𝑟2 }

9

not. Write ✓ if it is a quadratic inequality and X if it is not.
