• Does this cell need or generate electricity? Explain your answer briefly.

The cell that mentioned above generate electricity, because the cell uses the energy released
during a spontaneous redox reaction to generate electricity.

Zn (s) → Zn2+ (aq) + 2e- Eo cell = -0,76 Volt

Pt (S) → Pt (S) (inert metal) Eo cell = 1,20 Volt

Because of value Eo Zn2+ less than Pt (S) , in this voltaic cell Zn2+ as an anode and Pt (S) as an Cathode

Zn (s) → Zn2+ (aq) + 2e- (oxidized)

2Co3+ (aq) + 2e- →2Co2+ (aq) (reduced)

Cell reaction: Zn (s) + 2Co3+ (aq) → Zn2+ (aq) + 2Co2+ (aq)

• What is the function of the salt bridge

The function of salt bridge is to maintain the electrical neutrality of both electrolytic solutions
within the internal circuit. It basically helps in preventing the accumulation of positive and
negative charges around the respective electrolytic electrodes and further allowing a smooth
reaction to occur. It also provides continual flow of electrons. However, the purpose of a salt
bridge is not just to move electrons from the electrolyte rather to maintain charge balance
because the electrons move from one-half cell to the other.

From the cell mention above The salt bridge allows charges to be neutralized by a flow of anions
into the Zn2+ solution and a flow of cations into the Cu2+ solution. In the absence of a salt bridge
or some other similar connection, the reaction would rapidly cease because electrical neutrality
could not be maintained.
