Let us find out.
What’s New
The Basic Sentence Patterns
In English, sentences come in varying patterns. Patterns refer to the arrangements of
the elements of a sentence. It starts from the most basic, to the most complex. There are five
common basic sentence patterns in English, but we will only discuss two sentence patterns
(S-IV; S-TV-DO) in this module.
Example:
The boys kicked the ball.
S- IV
The S-IV is the simplest type among the sentence patterns. S stands for the subject, and IV
stands for intransitive verbs. A sentence having an S-IV pattern expresses a thought already
completed by the verb so it does not need an object. The verb of this pattern is called
intransitive verb.
5
S - TV-DO
The S-TV-DO is another common basic sentence pattern. S stands for the subject, TV stands
for the transitive verb and DO stands for direct object. A sentence in S-TV-DO pattern
includes a transitive verb that requires a direct object to complete its thought. The action
expressed by a transitive verb carries across to a receiver. The receiver of the action is called
the direct object.
To illustrate the concept, study the examples provided in the table.
S- IV S- TV - DO
Subject Intransitive Verb Subject Transitive Verb Direct Object
Mother bakes. Mother bakes a cake.
Carlo paints. Carlo paints a portrait.
The children read. The children read comics.
The pattern serves as a guide in forming the parts of a sentence together. Just
like a tailor, he uses a pattern from which the parts of a desired clothing are traced onto
a cloth before it is cut and sewn. The parts of the pattern are important to produce the
desired product. Similarly, each word comprising a sentence is important to express a
complete thought. Knowing how to use the sentence patterns improves your ability to
write clear and correct sentences and enhances better and effective communication.
What I Can Do
Directions: Identify the pattern used in each of the following sentences by writing S-IV
or S-TV-DO.
Directions: Complete the statement below by summarizing what you have learned on
the basic sentence patterns.
6
What’s More
Directions: Write two sentences for S-IV and S-TV-DO patterns.
Day 3
What’s In
Directions: Study the picture and sentences.
What’s New
The sentences above show the voices of the verb. The voices of the verb tell
whether the subject is the doer of the action or receiver of the action.
Example:
1. The lion ate the mouse. (Did the subject do the action?)
7
2. The mouse was eaten by the lion. (Did the subject do the action?)
In the first sentence, the subject performs the action while the subject in the
second sentence receives the action.
There are two voices of the verb, the active and passive voice.
Active Voice
When the subject does the action, the verb is in the active voice. Active voice is
used when more straightforward relation and clarity is required between the subject
and the verb.
Passive Voice
When the subject receives the action of the verb, the verb is in the passive voice.
Passive voice is used when the doer of the action is not known and the focus of the
sentence is on the action and not the subject.
Examples:
Verbs in the active voice Verbs in the passive voice
1. The father gives the money to the boy. The money is given by the father to
S TV DO the boy.
2. The author revealed a controversial issue. A controversial issue was revealed by
S TV DO the author.
3. The rich man accused the poor family. The poor family was accused by the
S TV DO rich man.
The subjects of the sentences in the first column perform the action. While the
subjects of the sentences in the second column receive the action.
Voices of the verb show relationships between the verb and the subject and/or
object. Writers need to be intentional about voice in order to ensure clarity. Using active
voice often improves clarity, while passive voice can help avoid unnecessary repetition.
In addition, the active voice stresses that the subject precedes the verb, again,
putting emphasis on the subject. Passive voice construction leaves out the subject and
focuses on the relationship between the verb and object.
What I Can Do
