Chapter 1 Pattern and Sequences
A sequence or number pattern is an ordered set of numbers or diagrams that follow a rule.
A term is a number or diagram in a sequence. A sequence can be described on a term-to-
term basis or position to term.

Project S
Chapter 1 Patters and Sequences

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognising the number sequences.

2. Recognising the patterns of the number sequences.

Learning outcomes:

1. Students will be able to determine the number sequences from the Pascal’s Triangle.
2. Students will be able to find the patterns of the number sequences from the Pascal’s
Triangle.

Task :

1. Carry out the activity below.

2. Construct the Pascal’s Triangle up to five rows.
3. Then, complete the following table.

Row Sum of numbers at the row

1
2
3
4
5

Hence, form a number sequence from the sums of numbers.

4. You are required to state the pattern of the number sequence obtained in step 3 using
algebraic expression and hence, find the 10th term.

5. Complete the Pascal’s Triangle until the 10th row. Calculate the sum of numbers in the
10th row and compare the finding with the 10th term in step 4.

6. Students may try the other step by repeating steps 3 and 4 for the 14th term and the 14th
row of the Pascal’s triangle
7. Students may try to repeat this activity for the following sequence.

ii) Construct the Pascal’s Triangle up to five rows.

iii) Complete the following table.

Row Sum of numbers at the row

1 1+1
2 1+2+1
3 1+3+3+1
4 1+4+6+4+1
5 1 + 5 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1
iv) State the pattern of the number sequence obtained in step 3 using algebraic expression
and hence, find the 10th term.

Result:

First row, = 1

The available sequence are 2 , 4 , 8 , 16 , 32 …

Pattern: 2 power of n, where n = 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 …. ( n + 1)4 = 1n 3 + 2x + 3n2 + 4n

Tenth term = 2 power 10 = 1024

v) Complete the Pascal’s Triangle until the 10th row. Calculate the sum of numbers in the
10th row and compare the finding with the 10th term in step 4.

Results

From the pascal triangle, tenth term = 1024

2 to the power of 10 from sequence number = 1024

vi)

14th term = 2 powers 14 = 16384

From the pascal triangle the total number of rows to 14 = 16384
