In ancient times, housework was hard because homes did not have water or electricity. One of the most
difficult household activities was washing clothes. People took their dirty clothes to the river once or
twice a week and used rocks, sand and water to clean them.
For many years, people tried to find easier ways to wash their clothes. Sailors, for example, put their
clothes in bags and threw them into the sea. This method worked quite well because the moving water
helped.
In 1846, the first washing machine was invented, but it was difficult to use. The water was cold, so
people warmed it on a fire. Then they pulled the clean, wet clothes through a special machine to take
out the water.
The first electric washing machine was designed in 1908. It was more useful because it could warm the

1) Since 1990s there has been an important change in Ho Chi Minh city- the growth of shopping mall
centers, or shopping malls. Today we find many shopping centers on the main streets of residential
areas. A large shopping center, or mall, usually has about 50 to 100 stores of all kinds and a large
parking lot for vehicles. Most malls have two or more department stores that sell everything you can
imagine: clothes, toys, cameras, sports equipment, etc. These department stores also sell furniture and
household appliances. Some shopping centers have supermarkets that sell food and a lot of things for
home. The other stores in a shopping center usually sells only one kind of thing: cosmetics, books,
shoes, clothes, music cassettes and CDs, etc. A shopping center often has one or more special
restaurants that serve fast food and drinks.
People like malls for many reasons. They feel safe because malls have security guards. Parking is

The council want people to know that everyone who feeds the pigeons is responsible for the streets
being so crowded with these birds. They hope to encourage the birds to move away from the city

Ten robotic birds have been brought into the city center to scare the pigeons away and visitors are
asked not to give the pigeons any food. The mechanical birds - known as 'robots' - will sit on the roofs
