alexander pope - an essay on criticism

1711, long poem entitled essay. starts with an epilogue——gerard genette
paratext paratextual elements.——in latin language of education and sublime talk
umberto eco and language of religion worthy of high esteem was told in latin.
thanks to this epilogue we can see how pope follow horace—heritage tribute to
horace. neoclassical—-<we can say about pope
"If you know any maxims better than these, be so good as to let me know them; if
not, use these as I do"
he knows what he says in this poem will be the part of the literary tradition. he
was aware of what he was doing he was not just dropping ideas.
matrilineage——aware of your place in literary tradition
he follows the same structure as horace ars poetica—he thinks i know horace
very well so trust me with rreferences to important works in the past.
a poem should reflect the tradition rather than individual ideal.————-
quality, law and the character of the critic—three parts.

critic should be moral. if you are in doubt be silent. if you are sure speak. to err is
human. always be awake kendi yargılarınla ilgili nobody is right all the time
nobody is wrong all the time. self knowledge turn the mirror to your own. know
thyself. hatanı sahiplen. greet with pleasure then. always observe yourself.
muhakeme duygusu olmalı, humble olmalı.
you should know where to speak. being nice and friendly while expressing your
ideas to other people is very important. you shouldnt mention the relationships
with other authors in order to be objective.
criticism has an aim to teach. eleştiri çok önemlidir, ekoldur—üzerine şiirler bile
yazılabilir.
pope, longinus ve horace a sesleniyor—kindred spiritislerine sesleniyor sanki
arkadaşlarıymış gibi.

geçmişi çalışmalısın never despise the past. richness her zaman önümüzde
değildir bazen past içinde olabilir. tutum anlatıyorr eleştiirmenle ilgili imperative bir
dil ile.
a little learning is a dangerous thing——alexander pope
son fikrine git diyor. trust not yourself but your defects. düşmanlarına da bak
sadece seni praise eden arkadaşlarına güvenme.

samuel johnson-preface to shakespeare

three parts——
first part, johnson gives the shakespeare nature, provide the review of his books.
from johnsons perspective
second part, shakespeare thoughts
third part, three unity and connection with shakespeare
test of time, gain recognition gradually, compare to other works if its better than
them it means it is a good work——-these are three rules by johnson
dont just imitate the classics in a dry way try to excel them try to surpass them. he
argues that we dont believe modern works rotten but we still read the classics.
we dont know who shakespeare is. he managed to be impersonal. says johnson.
first critic acknowledged shakespeare faults mention them fln filan
shakespeare first fault is to teach and delight——sometimes is simply for delight
not teaching, he did not write with moral reasons
second fault there are some plot holes do not stand for reason,
