MA129 Lab Report 2 - Functions

Name: Student Number: Fall 2022

1. [4 marks] A lab coordinator administers weekly homework and lab assignments to her class. It just so happens that there is a
linear relationship between homework grades and lab assignment grades. Below are the average homework and lab assignment
grades (in percents) for 3 students in the course:
Homework Grade (H) 54 72 90
Assignment Grade (A) 55 70 85

(a) Determine the average assignment grade (A) as a linear function of the average homework grade (H). Express your answer
in slope-intercept form.

(b) According to this model, what grade might a student expect to receive on a lab assignment after achieving 100% on their
homework? Round your result to two decimal places.

2. [4 marks] Consider the function g(x) = x2 − 2x + 5. Evaluate and simplify the following:

3
(a) g
q

(b) g(z − p)

g(2 + h) − g(2)
(c)
h
3. [6 marks] Determine the domain of each of the following functions. State all results using interval notation.

x+6
(a) f (x) = .
x2 − 36

1
(b) g(x) = − √
x+2

r
x2 − 4x + 3
(c) g(x) =
x+2

4. [7 marks] A property management company has determined that its total monthly revenue R obtained from student rental
units is given by:
1
R(p) = − p2 + 240p where p ≥ 0 is the monthly rent per unit, in dollars.
8
(a) Find the vertex and any intercepts (both p and R) of R(p). Clearly indicate which of these each calculation is for.

(b) Using the results in part (a), sketch R(p) for all p such that R(p) ≥ 0. Be sure to label the vertex and any intercepts

(c) Analyzing the graph in part (b), at what rental price per unit will the company realize a maximum revenue? What is the
maximum revenue at this rental price?
