ASSUMPTIONS OF THE ART

After the devastation of the 315 kph super typhoon Rolly, last November 2020, many
houses were damaged, infastructures wrecked with no water and power. One of the damaged
property were the Maritime Complex at San Miguel Port, San Miguel Island at Tabaco City.
Moreover, pandemic were also at the rampaged at that time. To out bring and enhance peace,
development and improve quality tine through those trying times. With that, community art
murals has been a positive link to social, cultural, economic and health benefits. Talented young
artists transform the Maritime Complex into a colorful mural, a welcome sight for San Miguel
Island residents and visitors. The lifeless and plain walls were painted by the Tabakkurit artists-
The art within Tabaqueños are composed of 100 amateur local painters, sketchers and illustrators
that mostly met at competition and art exhibit. The groups name come from two Bikolano words .
Tabak which means bolo and kurit or guhit in Tagalog, which means to draw or to sketch. The
artists also uses different artforms such as landscape, still life and 2D drawing with geometrical
patterns. One of the artist expressed how blessed in doing the artwork. MRF San Vicente, CSC
Mural Painting, TSCES walls, TNHS gate are some volunteer works by the Tabakkurit artist.

The mural painting contains 4 assumptions: Universal, cultural, experience and

expression. Universal because a group of different young artist team up to produce the artwork
regardless of gender, race, personality, etc. that shows that art is for everyone. The artwork is
cultural as well because it contains the products of Tabaco that remind and reminisce the pride of
the city especially the San Miguel Island. The artwork is also assume for experience because the
artists themself experience those trying times first handedly. Last but not the least is expression.
With the pandemic and typhoon, the mural wants to express the hope, faith and love that is
always within the heart of every Tabaqueño that were the main concept of the mural through the
man and woman wearing face at the artwork itself.

Aside from the assumptions, the relevance of the artwork is also conveyed which are
personal, social and cultural relevance. The artwork played an important role to the artist. The
painting serves as a legacy that remarks as a group that will always make the proud being one of
the artist. Improving their skills, meeting new family and friends and receiving incentive that
greatly helps to their studying finances are also some personal relevance of the artwork. What
makes the artwork for the social relevance is that it tackles social corcern during that time which
is the poorness, health and social crisis and environmental development after the damage of
typhoon Rolly.

Not only the people of Tabaco City adore the great yransformation of tge Maritime
Complex but also visitors who well appreciated the artwork. That is why the artwork was
featured in a news article which is the Manila Standard Net and also the Manila News.ph. You
