Proposal Title
Impacts of Environmental Policy: The Study of SETAC Meetings in Europe and America

Project Description
In the fall of 2023, I will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in English professional writing. My
primary interest regarding my future career is environmental writing. This is an extremely broad
field which can encompass many different writing styles and can focus on various aspects of the
environment including wildlife and sustainability. It would be beneficial to have some prior
hands-on experience when applying for jobs within this field. For this reason, I am interested in
attending the annual Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) meeting in
both Europe and North America. This would allow me the opportunity to see the differences in
their environmental policy and how the impacts of such on each area.

Describe the impact of this project on the undergraduate or graduate experience:

This experience will enable me to have some real-world practice with the mechanisms of
environmental policy and action. Specifically, the opportunity will help further my
understanding of the deciding factors and impacts of various policies from around the globe.

Being able to explore this topic will help showcase both my research and writing skills while
highlighting my interest in examining and taking action for more impactful environmental
policy.

What tangible outcomes do you expect to generate from this project?

As someone entering the job market for the first time, having any additional knowledge and
practice will be beneficial. The attendance of these two meetings will allow for personal
experience with environmental policy. Particularly, since SETAC is so large, with over 90
countries involved in the program, there is a chance to expand beyond just these two countries
someday and possibly see the worldwide impact of environmental policy differences. This
research has the potential to become a larger project that could advance my understanding of the
field. Also it would serve as an excellent addition to my portfolio and possibly help launch future
job opportunities.

How might this project advance the university’s and college’s commitment to Inclusive
Excellence?
Providing funds to this opportunity will allow me to research environmental policy in multiple
areas of the world and ultimately discover how the policy impacts the communities involved and
their sustainability goals. This would be an exceptional opportunity to help fulfill the university’s
sustainability vision to engage students in dialogue and discovery of more sustainable practice
through scholarly research. Supporting a research-based project such as this would be an
outstanding way to showcase the university’s expansive and active environmental involvement.

Along with this grant, I also plan to apply to the Office of Student Research (OSR) Travel Grant.
This grant can cover registration and costs associated with travel to the meeting including
housing, airfare, meals, etc. up to $300. The meetings themselves cost around $300 each so any
additional funds will be greatly appreciated.

Amount Requested from the SAFE Fund

Europe meeting for nonmember- $323
North America meeting for nonmember- $252

Curtis, Ashlyn
Food- $200

Can you use less than the requested amount? Please explain.
To make the most of this research, I find that it is essential that I am able to attend both the
European and North American SETAC meetings. Both of these meetings will require travel and
housing as one is out of state and the other out of country for me. Additionally, each of these
meetings cost around $300 to attend. There is no doubt that this will require a significant amount
of funds, so any funds will be valued.

If you are requesting grant monies to provide incentives to potential research subjects, has
the Office of Research approved your research proposal?
