COMSOL MULTI-PHYSICS
2.1 Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics
COMSOL Multiphysics is a powerful interactive simulation environment used to model and

solve all kinds of scientific and engineering problems. this software is very useful for a good

visualization of models build in it. it come up with the integrated desktop environment named

as Model builder where you get overview of the model have the access to all his useful

functions. Using the built-in physics interfaces and the advanced support for material

properties, you can build models by defining the relevant physical quantities such as its

Material properties, loads, Constraints, Sources, and Fluxes rather than by defining the

underlying equations. We can apply these variables, expressions directly to solid and fluid

domains, boundaries, edges, and points independently of the computational mesh. The

COMSOL Multiphysics software then internally compiles a set of equations which represent

the whole model.

We access the power of COMSOL Multiphysics as a self-sustaining product through

a flexible graphical user interface. Using these physics interfaces, you can perform various

types of studies including Stationery and time-dependent studies, Linear and nonlinear

studies, Eigenfrequency, modal, and frequency response studies When solving the models,

the COMSOL Multiphysics software assembles and solves the problem using a set of

advanced numerical analysis tools. The software runs the analysis together with adaptive

mesh refinement and error control using a variety of numerical solvers. The studies can make

use of multiprocessor systems and cluster computing, and you can run batch jobs and

parametric sweeps. Therefore, it is easy to parameterize any part of model.

2.2 Creating A New Model

We can set up a model guided by the Model Wizard or start from a Blank Model as shown in
the figure below
Using model wizard
Model Wizard guides us in setting up the space dimension, physics, and study

type as shown below

1. We can Start by selecting the space dimension for our model component i-e 3D, 2D

Axisymmetric, 2D, 1D Axisymmetric, or 0D

2. Now we can add one or more physics interfaces. These are organized in a number of

physics branches in order to make them easy to locate. These branches do not directly

correspond to products. When products are added to your COMSOL Multiphysics

desktop, one or more branches will be populated with additional physics interfaces.
3. We can also select the type of study to be performed. The available options depend on

the type physics interfaces, specify the number of dependent variables. The most

applicable and common study such as stationary appears at the top of the list under

general studies as given in figure below

2.3 COMSOL Desktop
This section is an overview of the major components in the COMSOL

Multiphysics  environment. These components are integrated into the COMSOL Desktop,

which you can personalize to your own modelling needs and preferences [3]

1. The top of the COMSOL Desktop includes a customizable Quick Access Toolbar.Quick

access toolbar is used to access our functionality such as file open , save ,copy paste

etc

2. Clicking Application builder toggle between model builder and application builder. It

allows us to use application based on our simulations.

QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR — Use these buttons for
access to functionality such as file open/save,
undo/redo, copy/paste, and delete

Clicking Application builder toggle between

model builder and application builder. It allows us
to use application based on our simulations.

3. Model Builder helps you go from geometry to simulation results in an easy-to-follow

workflow[4]. It can also be accessed at the top of the comsol desktop. It includes

imported models,components,meshes,study,results.
4. Global parameters are user-defined constant scalars that are usable throughout the

model. A global parameter expression can contain numbers, global parameters, built-in

constants, built-in and user-defined functions. We can define global parameters in the

Parameters as shown below in figure

5. The Graphics window is a graphical view of the geometry, mesh, and results of the

model
 The window has useful tool axis orientation for changing the view of our model as

given in figure below

 Similarly we can take image of our model or snap of full axis ,print or change the

colors of various boundaries in our model by using the following options given below

 Similarly the option of transparency, projection, hide and selecting the boundary is also

available
