The Tarjama and Ureed.com are at the centre of this dispute. Ureed.com's past, present, and future are
all examined in this case. The company provides translation services between English and Arabic. '
Translation was first provided by full-time remote employees, the majority of whom were women.
Afterwards, the company founded Ureed.com, a website that provides online service. Freelancers
provided the bulk of the service under Ureed.com, bidding on the many jobs the company had available.
Ureed.com Academy was started in October of this year. A joint effort between Saint Joseph University
of Beirut and a MOOC (USJ). It also released a translation service that is based on a machine. For
example, the organisation is considering expanding into countries like the United Kingdom (UK),
Pakistan (Pakistan), and Urdu (Urdu).
Nour Al-Hassan founded Tarjama in 2007 with three other coworkers who lasted less than a month.
When they were working for USAID, they came into difficulties translating from English to Arabic.
Raja'a AbdelAziz and another former legal translator joined Al-team Hassan's after she was left alone.
Al-Hassan offered full-time employment to the two translators to work from home because they couldn't
get a large office. A huge office space and other expenses were no longer a problem thanks to this
solution. Clients had some doubts about the agreement at first. Employee surveillance was the most
frequently cited grievance. By maintaining an emphasis on quality rather than quantity, the organisation
was able to overcome any reservations that could have existed. In order to tap into a larger pool of
female employees, the corporation made it possible for employees to work from home. The team's
mission was made more difficult by the fact that Arabic is a complex language that has only just begun
to be studied in depth. They needed a staff with a high degree of linguistic sophistication. This
necessitates a thorough screening of the translators when they are hired. Through a standardised test,
translators' translation talents were evaluated across various common but highly sophisticated fields,
such as law and finance. The employee's wage is set in accordance with his or her level of skill and the
regions in which they work. For its clients, Tarjama is able to offer customised and high-quality service.
They hold their personnel to a high standard of punctuality.
A translation service platform called Ureed.com was released in June 2017 after a testing period that
began in January of the same year. Al-Hassan sought to take advantage of the expanding but as-yet-
untapped demand for high-quality translation services on the Internet, so he founded this service. There
was an emphasis on multilingual services, which allowed customers to discover the right people at the
right moment with the correct competence in a short period of time. A "marketplace for words" was the
slogan.
Ureed.com primarily employed independent contractors. It was offered to each freelancer with a profile
where they may add their own details. In order to maintain their credibility, freelancers keep their
profiles up-to-date with their education and experience. The only difference between Tarjama and
Ureed.com is that Ureed.com actually put their freelancers through testing before they were accepted.
Using these new tests, they were able to do it simultaneously among thousands of people. MCQs and
paragraphs were used in the tests, which were divided into different categories and had three levels of
difficulty.
B2C generates 20% of total revenue, whereas B2B generates 80% of total revenue. Medical and health
content platforms like Altibbi.com and ecommerce player Noon.com comprise the B2B model.
Because it receives a 20% commission from freelancers, Ureed.com feels it has a duty to protect their
rights. Disparity between the freelancer and customer could lead to disputes, such as the client saying
that the job done does not meet the agreed upon standards. In these instances, the freelancer's work was
examined by the QA department. The freelancer will be paid from the escrow account if the decision is
made in their favour. The freelancer will be requested to resubmit it if it is found to be against them.
Digital marketing channels including LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are used to promote
the brand. New freelancers have been brought in through digital marketing, resulting to an increase of
up to 14,000 in October 2018. Talent acquisition managers have been brought in because of the
increased number of applicants.
As the need for Arabic translators grows in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), employers must
do more to retain the services of independent contractors. Health insurance and other internet discounts
are just a few of the ways Ureed.com keeps them happy. Because freelancers are a top priority, it is
essential to keep the platform engaging.
On October 1, 2018, Ureed.com Academy was started. For the objective of providing students with
relevant translation courses that are not typically taught in schools, this was done. Freelancers can also
receive the information they need to do their work if they do this. The MOOC was created with the help
of USJ, a renowned linguistics institution. The course outline was provided by Ureed.com, and
technology was integrated as needed. Ureed.com, on the other hand, opted for a more realistic approach
by incorporating more practical tools. The training began with the fundamentals of translation, then
progressed to the use of analytical tools, and finally presented critical insights for improving translation.
In addition, freelancers posted the certificate they received after finishing the course on their LinkedIn
pages.
It was also possible for the Ureed.com Product Development Team to use tools like machine learning
and artificial intelligence. In addition, they are now giving machine translation tools. Like Google
Translate, but better in terms of accuracy, efficiency and consistency.
As a result of its success, Ureed.com has extended to nations including Jordan, the United Arab Emirates
(UAE), and Saudi Arabia. It aims to grow into English-speaking countries, such as the United Kingdom
and the United States, to do the same thing. Other languages such as Urdu are being considered for
inclusion as well. Increasing the percentage of B2C revenue, as well as the number of freelancers, are
further objectives.
