Name: Satyendra Nath Bose

Biography:

Satyendra Nath Bose was born in Kolkata, in a Bengali Kayastha family. His schooling began at the age of
five. He passed his entrance examination in 1909 and stood fifth in the order of merit. He next joined the
intermediate science course at the Presidency College, Kolkata.
Bose received a Bachelor of Science in mixed mathematics from Presidency College, standing first in
1913.His marks in the MSc examination created a new record in the annals of the University of Kolkata,
which is yet to be surpassed.
After completing his MSc, Bose joined the Science College, Kolkata University as a research scholar in
1916 and started his studies in the theory of relativity.
As a polyglot, Bose was well versed in several languages such as Bengali, English, French, and German. 
When he died in 1974, he left behind his wife, two sons, and five daughters.
Area of work:
He was an Indian mathematician and physicist specializing in theoretical physics. He is best known for
his work on quantum mechanics in the early 1920s

Contributions/discovery:
In the 1920s, Indian scientist Satyendra Nath Bose discovered one of the classes of particles, which came
to be known as the boson - Bosons are particles that carry energy and forces throughout the universe– A
collaboration with Albert Einstein in developing a theory regarding the gas like qualities of
electromagnetic radiation.

Achievements/ awards:

A Fellow of the Royal Society, was awarded India's second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan,
in 1954 by the Government of India. He was nominated four times for the Nobel Prize in Physics but was
never awarded the honor.
