Reflection on The Dog Eaters

The story shows the life of a family that is experiencing poverty. That
situation is being experienced by most of the families here in the Philippines. Early
marriage, premature pregnancy, irresponsible partner etc. can be the reason why
most families are experiencing poverty. Like what the story shows, Mariana, the
wife of Victor, is very disappointed because the life that she is experiencing now is
not the life that she is expecting for being together with Victor. They were forced
to be together because Mariana got pregnant unexpectedly. Victor is very
irresponsible. He just drinks tuba all day and stewed dog as their pulutan. I think
he is just not ready to have a family and not mature enough to be a provider for
his family. Being in-love is not enough to provide your family’s needs. Before
entering that kind of life, we must be mature enough and be able to support our
family’s basic needs. Life is not all about love and affection, it can be your
foundation for a strong and happy relationship but in reality, life is hard, entering
a life of having a family and not being ready is not an ideal thing to do.

Reflection on May Day Eve

The story shows a situation of a broken marriage between Don Badoy and
Donya Agueda. Donya Agueda forced herself to marry Don Badoy because she
believed in a superstition that she would be able to see her future husband by
reciting a phrase in front of the mirror. They may have a good relationship at first,
but later in the story it turns out that Badoy and Agueda have a bitter marriage.
We cannot force someone to love us, but you can do something for you to be
loved back. Not all marriages turn out to be happy all the time, some may start
sweet at first but as time goes on, it would become bitter. Some started as bitter
and became sweet because they both worked for it to be sweet. It’s okay to be
not loved by someone who you love, but it is not okay to force someone to love
you just because you love him or her. Before getting married, we should consider
your feelings toward each other because it is your foundation of a strong and
happy married life.
