Ans. Salvatore fell in love madly with a pretty girl who lived on grand marina and got engaged to her.
Forced to do compulsory military service before their wedding, he left his island tearfully to join king
victor Emmanuel’s navy. During his tenure he became terribly homesick. When he was sent to china
he was caught by rheumatism and was rendered unfit for further military service. Rather than being
upset, he was overjoyed at the thought of going home.

On his return, He became emotional when native creatures of his island exchanged greeting with
him. When his whole family came to welcome him on the jetty, his eyes were searching for her
fiancée, but could not find her.. He asked his mother where the girl was but they did not know. In the
evening, he went to grand marina to her house and was disappointed to hear that on learning of his
illness the girl and her parents have decided to not to proceed to their wedding. They have already told
their decision to Salvatore’s parents but they lacked courage to tell him. But in spite of this blunt
rejection, Salvatore did not blame her. Instead, he reasoned that fisherman’s life is hard and requires
strength and stamina and a girl could not be expected to marry a man who might not be able to
support her. He was terribly unhappy, wept on his mother’s bosom but never spoke any harsh words
for her.
